1 <스무 번째 말씀> 악인을 부러워하지 말고 그들과 어울리려고 하지 마라.

1 Don't envy evil people or desire their company.

2 그 마음은 나쁜 일 할 것만 계획하고 그 입술은 악한 말만 한다.

2 For their hearts plot violence, and their words always stir up trouble.

3 <스물한 번째 말씀> 집은 지혜로 지어지고 통찰력으로 튼튼해진다.

3 A house is built by wisdom and becomes strong through good sense.

4 지식 때문에 방마다 귀하고 아름다운 보물들이 가득 찬다.

4 Through knowledge its rooms are filled with all sorts of precious riches and valuables.

5 <스물두 번째 말씀> 지혜로운 사람은 강하고 지식 있는 사람은 더 강해진다.

5 The wise are mightier than the strong, and those with knowledge grow stronger and stronger.

6 너는 지혜로운 계책이 있을 때만 전쟁을 일으켜라. 조언자들이 많아야 승리할 수 있다.

6 So don't go to war without wise guidance; victory depends on having many advisers.

7 <스물세 번째 말씀> 어리석은 사람에게는 지혜가 너무 높이 있어서 그는 사람들이 모인 데서 입을 열지 못한다.

7 Wisdom is too lofty for fools. Among leaders at the city gate, they have nothing to say.

8 <스물네 번째 말씀> 악을 꾀하는 사람은 교활한 사람이라 불릴 것이다.

8 A person who plans evil will get a reputation as a troublemaker.

9 어리석은 생각은 죄요, 거만한 사람은 사람들이 싫어한다.

9 The schemes of a fool are sinful; everyone detests a mocker.

10 <스물다섯 번째 말씀> 네가 고난의 때에 비틀거리면 네 힘이 약하다는 것을 드러내는 것이다.

10 If you fail under pressure, your strength is too small.

11 죽음으로 끌려가는 사람들을 구하고 죽임당하게 된 사람들을 구해 내어라.

11 Rescue those who are unjustly sentenced to die; save them as they stagger to their death.

12 만약 네가 "이것에 대해 우리가 아는 바가 없다"라고 할지라도 마음을 살펴보시는 분이 그것을 알아채지 못하시겠느냐? 네 생명을 지키시는 분이 그것을 모르시겠느냐? 그분이 각 사람이 행한 대로 갚지 않으시겠느냐?

12 Don't excuse yourself by saying, "Look, we didn't know." For God understands all hearts, and he sees you. He who guards your soul knows you knew. He will repay all people as their actions deserve.

13 <스물여섯 번째 말씀> 내 아들아, 꿀이 좋으니 먹어라. 꿀송이를 먹으면 입에 달 것이다.

13 My child, eat honey, for it is good, and the honeycomb is sweet to the taste.

14 마찬가지로 지혜는 네 영혼에 달다. 네가 그것을 찾으면 네게 상이 있을 것이고 네가 기대하는 바가 끊어지지 않을 것이다.

14 In the same way, wisdom is sweet to your soul. If you find it, you will have a bright future, and your hopes will not be cut short.

15 <스물일곱 번째 말씀> 오, 악한 사람아! 의인의 집에 숨어 있지 마라. 그가 쉬는 곳을 무너뜨리지 마라.

15 Don't wait in ambush at the home of the godly, and don't raid the house where the godly live.

16 의인은 일곱 번 넘어져도 다시 일어나지만 악인은 재앙을 만나면 넘어진다.

16 The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again. But one disaster is enough to overthrow the wicked.

17 <스물여덟 번째 말씀> 네 원수가 쓰러질 때 좋아하지 마라. 그가 걸려 넘어질 때 네 마음에 기뻐하지 마라.

17 Don't rejoice when your enemies fall; don't be happy when they stumble.

18 그러면 여호와께서 보고 기뻐하지 않으시고 그 진노를 네게로 돌이키실지 모른다.

18 For the Lord will be displeased with you and will turn his anger away from them.

19 <스물아홉 번째 말씀> 악한 사람 때문에 초조해하거나 악인을 부러워하지 마라.

19 Don't fret because of evildoers; don't envy the wicked.

20 악한 사람은 상이 없고 악인의 등불은 꺼져 버린다.

20 For evil people have no future; the light of the wicked will be snuffed out.

21 <서른 번째 말씀> 내 아들아, 여호와와 왕을 경외하고 반역자들과 함께하지 마라.

21 My child, fear the Lord and the king. Don't associate with rebels,

22 이는 그런 사람들에게 갑자기 재앙이 닥칠 것이기 때문이다. 여호와와 왕이 어떤 몰락을 가져다줄지 누가 알겠느냐?

22 for disaster will hit them suddenly. Who knows what punishment will come from the Lord and the king?

23 <지혜자의 또 다른 말씀> 이것은 지혜로운 사람의 말이다. 재판할 때 편견이 있는 것은 좋지 않다.

23 Here are some further sayings of the wise. It is wrong to show favoritism when passing judgment.

24 죄인에게 "의롭다"라고 하는 사람은 누구든지 사람들의 저주를 받고 민족들의 비난을 받게 된다.

24 A judge who says to the wicked, "You are innocent," will be cursed by many people and denounced by the nations.

25 그러나 죄인을 꾸짖는 사람은 잘되고 좋은 복을 받을 것이다.

25 But it will go well for those who convict the guilty; rich blessings will be showered on them.

26 바른말 해 주는 것이 진정한 우정이다.

26 An honest answer is like a kiss of friendship.

27 바깥일을 다 해 놓고 네 밭을 다 마무리한 후에야 집안을 세워라.

27 Do your planning and prepare your fields before building your house.

28 아무 이유 없이 네 이웃에게 불리한 증언을 하지 말고 네 입술로 속이지 마라.

28 Don't testify against your neighbors without cause; don't lie about them.

29 "그가 내게 한 그대로 나도 그에게 해 줄 것이다. 그가 한 짓을 갚아 주리라"라고 하지 마라.

29 And don't say, "Now I can pay them back for what they've done to me! I'll get even with them!"

30 내가 게으름뱅이의 밭과 생각 없는 사람의 포도밭을 지나가면서 보니

30 I walked by the field of a lazy person, the vineyard of one with no common sense.

31 가시가 여기저기에 나 있고 땅은 잡초로 덮여 있으며 돌담은 무너져 있었다.

31 I saw that it was overgrown with nettles. It was covered with weeds, and its walls were broken down.

32 그때 내가 살펴본 것을 곰곰이 생각해 보고 교훈을 얻었다.

32 Then, as I looked and thought about it, I learned this lesson.

33 조금만 더 자자, 조금만 더 졸자, 조금만 더 손을 모으고 쉬자 하면

33 A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest -

34 가난이 강도같이, 궁핍함이 방패로 무장한 군사같이 네게 이를 것이다.

34 then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.

1 <솔로몬의 또 다른 잠언> 이것들 또한 솔로몬의 잠언으로 유다 왕 히스기야의 신하들이 기록한 것이다.

1 These are more proverbs of Solomon, collected by the advisers of King Hezekiah of Judah.

2 일을 감추는 것은 하나님의 영광이요, 일을 살피는 것은 왕의 영광이다.

2 It is God's privilege to conceal things and the king's privilege to discover them.

3 하늘이 높고 땅이 깊은 것처럼 왕의 마음도 살필 수가 없다.

3 No one can comprehend the height of heaven, the depth of the earth, or all that goes on in the king's mind!

4 은의 찌꺼기를 없애라. 그래야 은세공업자가 그릇으로 만들 수 있다.

4 Remove the impurities from silver, and the sterling will be ready for the silversmith.

5 왕 앞에서 악인을 없애라. 그러면 그 왕좌가 의로 세워질 수 있다.

5 Remove the wicked from the king's court, and his reign will be made secure by justice.

6 왕 앞에서 나서지 말고 위대한 사람들의 자리에 서 있지 마라.

6 Don't demand an audience with the king or push for a place among the great.

7 그가 네게 "이리 올라오너라"라고 하는 것이 너를 보고 있는 귀족들 앞에서 너를 낮추는 것보다 낫다.

7 It's better to wait for an invitation to the head table than to be sent away in public disgrace. Just because you've seen something,

8 네가 본 것을 성급하게 법정으로 가지고 가지 마라. 네 이웃이 모욕이라도 하면 결국에 어떻게 하려고 그러느냐?

8 don't be in a hurry to go to court. For what will you do in the end if your neighbor deals you a shameful defeat?

9 다툴 일이 있으면 당사자와 직접 하고 다른 사람에게까지 그 비밀을 드러내지 마라.

9 When arguing with your neighbor, don't betray another person's secret.

10 그 말을 듣는 사람이 너를 모욕할지 모르고 너에 대한 좋지 않은 평판이 끊이지 않을지 모른다.

10 Others may accuse you of gossip, and you will never regain your good reputation.

11 적절한 말을 하는 것은 은쟁반에 금사과와 같다.

11 Timely advice is lovely, like golden apples in a silver basket.

12 지혜로운 꾸짖음이 그 말을 들을 줄 아는 사람의 귀에는 금귀고리나 순금 장식과 같다.

12 To one who listens, valid criticism is like a gold earring or other gold jewelry.

13 믿음직한 사절은 그를 보낸 사람에게 추수 때의 차가운 눈같이 그 주인의 영혼을 시원하게 해 준다.

13 Trustworthy messengers refresh like snow in summer. They revive the spirit of their employer.

14 선물을 한다고 거짓말로 자랑하는 사람은 비 없는 구름과 바람 같다.

14 A person who promises a gift but doesn't give it is like clouds and wind that bring no rain.

15 인내는 통치자를 설득할 수 있고 부드러운 혀는 뼈를 녹일 수 있다.

15 Patience can persuade a prince, and soft speech can break bones.

16 꿀을 찾았느냐? 그러면 적당히 먹어 과식해 토하지 않게 하여라.

16 Do you like honey? Don't eat too much, or it will make you sick!

17 이웃집을 자주 드나들지 마라. 그러면 그가 너를 지겨워하며 싫어하게 된다.

17 Don't visit your neighbors too often, or you will wear out your welcome.

18 이웃에 대해 불리한 증언을 하는 사람은 방망이나 칼이나 뾰족한 화살과 같다.

18 Telling lies about others is as harmful as hitting them with an ax, wounding them with a sword, or shooting them with a sharp arrow.

19 고난의 때에 진실하지 못한 사람을 믿는 것은 부러진 이나 어긋난 발과 같다.

19 Putting confidence in an unreliable person in times of trouble is like chewing with a broken tooth or walking on a lame foot.

20 마음이 무거운 사람에게 노래를 불러 주는 것은 추운 날에 겉옷을 빼앗거나 소다에 식초를 붓는 것과 같다.

20 Singing cheerful songs to a person with a heavy heart is like taking someone's coat in cold weather or pouring vinegar in a wound.

21 네 원수가 굶주리면 먹을 것을 주고 그가 목말라하면 마실 물을 주어라.

21 If your enemies are hungry, give them food to eat. If they are thirsty, give them water to drink.

22 이렇게 하면 네가 그의 얼굴을 부끄럽게 하는 것이며 여호와께서 네게 상 주실 것이다.

22 You will heap burning coals of shame on their heads, and the Lord will reward you.

23 북쪽 바람이 비를 불러오는 것처럼 뒤에서 험담하는 혀는 얼굴에 분노를 일으킨다.

23 As surely as a north wind brings rain, so a gossiping tongue causes anger!

24 잘 다투는 아내와 넓은 집에서 사는 것보다 지붕 한 모퉁이에서 혼자 사는 게 낫다.

24 It's better to live alone in the corner of an attic than with a quarrelsome wife in a lovely home.

25 먼 땅에서 들려오는 좋은 소식은 지친 영혼에게 주는 시원한 물과 같다.

25 Good news from far away is like cold water to the thirsty.

26 악인에게 무릎 꿇는 의인은 진흙 섞인 샘이나 더러워진 우물 같다.

26 If the godly give in to the wicked, it's like polluting a fountain or muddying a spring.

27 꿀을 너무 많이 먹는 것이 좋지 않듯이 자기 스스로 영광을 구하는 것은 좋지 않다.

27 It's not good to eat too much honey, and it's not good to seek honors for yourself.

28 자제력이 없는 사람은 성벽이 무너져 내린 성과 같다.

28 A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls.

1 어리석은 사람에게는 영광이 어울리지 않으니 그것은 마치 한여름의 눈이나 추수 때의 비와 같다.

1 Honor is no more associated with fools than snow with summer or rain with harvest.

2 떠도는 참새나 날아가는 제비처럼 이유 없이 퍼붓는 저주는 아무에게도 들이닥치지 않는다.

2 Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse will not land on its intended victim.

3 말에는 채찍이, 나귀에는 굴레가, 어리석은 사람의 등에는 매질이 필요하다.

3 Guide a horse with a whip, a donkey with a bridle, and a fool with a rod to his back!

4 어리석은 사람에게 그 어리석음에 맞춰 대답해 주지 마라. 그렇지 않으면 너 자신도 그와 같이 돼 버린다.

4 Don't answer the foolish arguments of fools, or you will become as foolish as they are.

5 어리석은 사람에게 그 어리석음에 맞춰 대답해 보아라. 아마 스스로 지혜로운 줄 알 것이다.

7 저는 사람의 다리가 힘이 없듯이 어리석은 사람의 입에서 나오는 잠언도 그렇다.

7 A proverb in the mouth of a fool is as useless as a paralyzed leg.

8 어리석은 사람에게 영광을 돌리는 것은 무릿매에 돌을 매는 것과 같다.

8 Honoring a fool is as foolish as tying a stone to a slingshot.

9 어리석은 사람의 입에서 나오는 잠언은 술 취한 사람의 손에 들린 가시나무와 같다.

9 A proverb in the mouth of a fool is like a thorny branch brandished by a drunk.

10 어리석은 사람이나 그냥 지나가는 사람을 고용하는 사람은 아무에게나 활을 쏘아 대는 궁수와 같다.

10 An employer who hires a fool or a bystander is like an archer who shoots at random.

11 개가 그 토한 것을 다시 먹듯이 어리석은 사람도 자기 어리석음을 되풀이한다.

11 As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his foolishness.

12 자기 스스로 지혜롭다고 생각하는 사람을 보았느냐? 그보다는 차라리 어리석은 사람에게 더 소망이 있다.

12 There is more hope for fools than for people who think they are wise.

13 게으름뱅이는 "길에 사자가 있다. 사자가 거리에 어슬렁거리고 있다!"라고 한다.

13 The lazy person claims, "There's a lion on the road! Yes, I'm sure there's a lion out there!"

14 문짝이 경첩에 붙어 돌아가듯이 게으름뱅이도 자기 침대에서 뒹군다.

14 As a door swings back and forth on its hinges, so the lazy person turns over in bed.

15 게으름뱅이는 손을 그릇에 넣고도 입에 떠 넣는 것조차 귀찮아한다.

15 Lazy people take food in their hand but don't even lift it to their mouth.

16 게으름뱅이는 신중하게 대답하는 일곱 사람보다 자기가 더 지혜롭다고 생각한다.

17 지나가다가 자기 일도 아닌 다툼에 간섭하는 것은 개의 귀를 잡는 것과 같다.

18 이웃을 속이고 나서 "농담이었다"라고 말하는 사람은 횃불을 던지고 화살을 쏴 사람을 죽이는 미친 사람과 같다.

20 나무가 없으면 불이 꺼지듯이 남의 말을 하는 사람이 없으면 다툼도 그친다.

20 Fire goes out without wood, and quarrels disappear when gossip stops.

21 숯불에 숯을 넣고 타는 불에 나무를 넣는 것처럼 다투기 좋아하는 사람은 싸움에 불을 붙인다.

21 A quarrelsome person starts fights as easily as hot embers light charcoal or fire lights wood.

22 남의 말을 하는 것은 맛있는 음식 같아서 사람의 뱃속 깊이 내려간다.?

22 Rumors are dainty morsels that sink deep into one's heart.

23 악한 마음을 품고서 그럴듯한 말을 하는 입술은 은도금을 한 질그릇과 같다.

23 Smooth words may hide a wicked heart, just as a pretty glaze covers a clay pot.

24 남을 미워하는 사람은 입술로 그럴듯하게 꾸미지만 속에는 딴마음을 품고 있다.

24 People may cover their hatred with pleasant words, but they're deceiving you.

25 그 말이 그럴듯해도 그를 믿지 마라. 마음에 일곱 가지 역겨운 것이 있다.

25 They pretend to be kind, but don't believe them. Their hearts are full of many evils.

26 미움을 속여 감추더라도 그 악이 회중 앞에 드러나게 될 것이다.

26 While their hatred may be concealed by trickery, their wrongdoing will be exposed in public.

27 사람이 함정을 파면 자기가 빠지게 되고 돌을 굴리면 그 돌이 다시 자기에게로 굴러 온다.

27 If you set a trap for others, you will get caught in it yourself. If you roll a boulder down on others, it will crush you instead.

28 거짓말하는 혀는 그 혀 때문에 고난당하는 사람들을 싫어하고 아첨은 파멸을 가져온다.

28 A lying tongue hates its victims, and flattering words cause ruin.

1 내일 일을 자랑하지 마라. 네가 하루 동안에 무슨 일이 일어날지 알 수 없기 때문이다.

1 Don't brag about tomorrow, since you don't know what the day will bring.

2 남이 너를 칭찬하게 하고 스스로 하지 마라. 칭찬은 남이 해 주는 것이지 자기 스스로 하는 것이 아니다.

2 Let someone else praise you, not your own mouth - a stranger, not your own lips.

3 돌은 무겁고 모래는 짐이 되지만 어리석은 사람의 분노는 그 둘을 합친 것보다 더 무겁다.

3 A stone is heavy and sand is weighty, but the resentment caused by a fool is even heavier.

4 화내는 것이 무섭고 진노가 폭풍 같다지만 질투 앞에 누가 당해 낼 수 있겠는가?

4 Anger is cruel, and wrath is like a flood, but jealousy is even more dangerous.

5 숨은 사랑보다는 드러내고 꾸짖는 것이 낫다.

5 An open rebuke is better than hidden love!

6 친구의 꾸지람은 진실하나 원수의 입맞춤은 속이는 것이다.

6 Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy.

7 배부른 사람은 꿀도 싫어하지만 배고픈 사람에게는 쓴 것도 달다.

7 A person who is full refuses honey, but even bitter food tastes sweet to the hungry.

8 ?자기 집을 떠나 방황하는 사람은 둥지를 떠나 헤매는 새와 같다.

8 A person who strays from home is like a bird that strays from its nest.

9 기름과 향수가 마음을 기쁘게 하듯 친구의 진심 어린 충고도 그러하다.

9 The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense.

10 네 친구와 네 아버지의 친구를 버리지 말고 재앙이 닥쳤을 때 네 형제의 집으로 가지 마라. 가까운 이웃이 멀리 사는 형제보다 낫다.

10 Never abandon a friend - either yours or your father's. When disaster strikes, you won't have to ask your brother for assistance. It's better to go to a neighbor than to a brother who lives far away.

11 내 아들아, 지혜롭게 돼 내 마음을 기쁘게 하여라. 그러면 나를 욕하는 사람에게 내가 대답할 수 있을 것이다.

11 Be wise, my child, and make my heart glad. Then I will be able to answer my critics.

12 현명한 사람은 위험을 미리 보고 피하지만 우둔한 사람은 그대로 가다가 고난을 당한다.

12 A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.

13 타인을 위해 보증이 된 사람은 옷을 잡혀야 하며 외인의 보증이 된 사람은 자기의 몸을 잡혀야 한다.

13 Get security from someone who guarantees a stranger's debt. Get a deposit if he does it for foreigners.

14 아침 일찍 큰 소리로 그 이웃을 축복하면 그것은 오히려 저주로 여겨질 것이다.

14 A loud and cheerful greeting early in the morning will be taken as a curse!

15 다투기 좋아하는 아내는 비 오는 날 끊임없이 새는 물과 같고

15 A quarrelsome wife is as annoying as constant dripping on a rainy day.

16 그런 여자를 다스리는 것은 바람을 다스리려는 것 같으며 손으로 기름을 잡으려는 것 같다.

16 Stopping her complaints is like trying to stop the wind or trying to hold something with greased hands.

17 철이 철을 날카롭게 하듯 사람이 그 친구의 얼굴을 빛나게 한다.

17 As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.

18 무화과나무를 잘 돌보는 사람은 그 열매를 먹을 것이요 윗사람의 시중을 잘 드는 사람은 영예를 얻을 것이다.

18 As workers who tend a fig tree are allowed to eat the fruit, so workers who protect their employer's interests will be rewarded.

19 얼굴이 물에 비치듯이 사람의 마음은 그 사람됨을 나타낸다.

19 As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the real person.

20 지옥과 파멸은 결코 만족이 없듯이 사람의 눈도 만족함이 없다.

20 Just as Death and Destruction are never satisfied, so human desire is never satisfied.

21 은은 도가니에서, 금은 풀무에서 단련되듯 사람도 칭찬으로 사람됨을 시험해 볼 수 있다.

21 Fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but a person is tested by being praised.

22 어리석은 사람을 절구에 넣고 낟알과 함께 공이로 찧을지라도 그 어리석음은 벗겨지지 않는다.

22 You cannot separate fools from their foolishness, even though you grind them like grain with mortar and pestle.

23 네 양 떼의 상태를 잘 알고 네 가축 떼를 주의 깊게 살펴라.

23 Know the state of your flocks, and put your heart into caring for your herds,

24 이는 부가 영원히 지속되지 않으며 면류관이 대대로 이어지는 것이 아니기 때문이다.

24 for riches don't last forever, and the crown might not be passed to the next generation.

25 풀을 베면 새 풀이 자라나니 산에서 나는 꼴을 거둘 수 있다.

25 After the hay is harvested and the new crop appears and the mountain grasses are gathered in,

26 그러면 양으로 옷을 만들고 염소들로 밭 값을 치를 수 있을 것이다.

26 your sheep will provide wool for clothing, and your goats will provide the price of a field.

27 그리고 네 염소젖은 넉넉해 너와 네 가족뿐만 아니라 네 여종도 먹일 수 있을 것이다.

27 And you will have enough goats' milk for yourself, your family, and your servant girls.
