1 <반드시 지혜를 얻으라> 자녀들아, 아버지의 가르침을 잘 듣고 주의해 깨달음을 얻으라.

1 My children, listen when your father corrects you. Pay attention and learn good judgment,

2 내가 너희에게 좋은 가르침을 줄 테니 너희는 내 교훈을 버리지 말라.

2 for I am giving you good guidance. Don't turn away from my instructions.

3 나도 어려서는 내 아버지의 아들이었고 내 어머니가 사랑하는 외아들이었는데

3 For I, too, was once my father's son, tenderly loved as my mother's only child.

4 그때 내 아버지는 나를 이렇게 가르치셨다. "내가 하는 말을 기억하고 잊지 마라. 내 명령을 지켜라. 그러면 네가 잘살 것이다.

4 My father taught me, "Take my words to heart. Follow my commands, and you will live.

5 지혜와 깨달음을 얻어라. 내 말을 잊지 말고 내가 하는 말에서 벗어나지 마라.

5 Get wisdom; develop good judgment. Don't forget my words or turn away from them.

6 지혜를 버리지 마라. 그러면 지혜가 너를 보호할 것이다. 지혜를 사랑하여라. 그러면 지혜가 너를 지킬 것이다.

6 Don't turn your back on wisdom, for she will protect you. Love her, and she will guard you.

7 지혜가 무엇보다 중요하니 지혜를 얻어라. 네가 가진 모든 것을 희생하고서라도 깨달음을 얻어라.

7 Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment.

8 지혜를 존경하여라. 그러면 지혜가 너를 높여 줄 것이다. 지혜를 붙잡아라. 그러면 지혜가 너를 영광스럽게 할 것이다.

8 If you prize wisdom, she will make you great. Embrace her, and she will honor you.

9 지혜가 네 머리에 우아한 화관을 씌워 주고 영광스러운 왕관을 네게 줄 것이다."

9 She will place a lovely wreath on your head; she will present you with a beautiful crown."

10 오 내 아들아, 내가 하는 말을 잘 듣고 받아들여라. 그러면 네가 장수할 것이다.

10 My child, listen to me and do as I say, and you will have a long, good life.

11 내가 네게 지혜의 길을 가르쳐 주고 너를 바른길로 이끌어 주었으니

11 I will teach you wisdom's ways and lead you in straight paths.

12 네가 걸을 때 네 걸음에 걸리는 것이 없고 네가 달릴 때 넘어지지 않을 것이다.

12 When you walk, you won't be held back; when you run, you won't stumble.

13 내 교훈을 꼭 붙잡고 굳게 지켜라. 그것이 네 생명이기 때문이다.

13 Take hold of my instructions; don't let them go. Guard them, for they are the key to life.

14 악인의 길에 발을 내딛지 말고 악한 사람의 길로 다니지 마라.

14 Don't do as the wicked do, and don't follow the path of evildoers.

15 그 길을 피하고 지나가지 말며 돌아서거라.

15 Don't even think about it; don't go that way. Turn away and keep moving.

16 그들은 악한 짓을 하지 않으면 잠을 못 자고 누군가를 해치지 않으면 잠이 오지 않는 사람들이다.

16 For evil people can't sleep until they've done their evil deed for the day. They can't rest until they've caused someone to stumble.

17 그들은 악한 방법으로 얻은 빵을 먹고 폭력으로 빼앗은 술을 마신다.

17 They eat the food of wickedness and drink the wine of violence!

18 그러나 의인의 길은 동틀 무렵 비추는 빛과 같아서 점점 밝아져 환한 대낮같이 되지만

18 The way of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, which shines ever brighter until the full light of day.

19 악인의 길은 어둠 같아서 넘어져도 무엇에 걸려 넘어졌는지조차 모른다.

19 But the way of the wicked is like total darkness. They have no idea what they are stumbling over.

20 내 아들아, 내가 하는 말을 주의하고 내 말에 귀를 기울여라.

20 My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words.

21 그것을 네게서 떠나지 않게 하고 그것을 네 마음속 깊이 잘 간직하여라.

21 Don't lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart,

22 내 말은 깨닫는 자들에게 생명이 되고 그들의 온몸을 건강하게 해 준다.

22 for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body.

23 무엇보다도 네 마음을 지켜라. 네 마음에서 생명의 샘이 흘러나오기 때문이다.

23 Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

24 더러운 말을 버리고 거짓되고 남을 해치는 말은 입 밖에도 내지 마라.

24 Avoid all perverse talk; stay away from corrupt speech.

25 네 눈은 앞만 똑바로 보고 다른 곳으로 시선을 돌리지 말고

25 Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you.

26 네가 발 디딜 곳을 잘 살피고 네 모든 길을 곧게 하며 확실히 행하여라.

26 Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path.

27 좌우로 치우치지 말고 네 발을 악에서 멀리하여라.

27 Don't get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil.

1 <간음에 대한 경고> 내 아들아, 내 지혜에 주의하고 내가 깨달은 것에 귀를 기울여라.

1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom; listen carefully to my wise counsel.

2 그러면 네가 분별력을 갖게 돼 지혜로운 말만 할 것이다.

2 Then you will show discernment, and your lips will express what you've learned.

3 창녀의 입술은 꿀처럼 달콤하고 그 말은 기름보다 미끄러우나

3 For the lips of an immoral woman are as sweet as honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil.

4 그것은 결국 쑥처럼 쓰고 양날 칼처럼 날카롭게 될 뿐이다.

4 But in the end she is as bitter as poison, as dangerous as a double-edged sword.

5 그 여자의 발은 죽음으로 가고 그 걸음은 무덤을 향해 달려간다.

5 Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave.

6 그녀는 생명의 길에는 관심이 없고 자기의 길이 비뚤어져도 그것을 깨닫지 못한다.

6 For she cares nothing about the path to life. She staggers down a crooked trail and doesn't realize it.

7 그러니 너희 자녀들아, 내 말을 듣고 내가 하는 말에서 떠나지 말라.

7 So now, my sons, listen to me. Never stray from what I am about to say.

8 그런 여자를 멀리하고 그 여자의 집 문 근처에는 얼씬도 하지 말라.

8 Stay away from her! Don't go near the door of her house!

9 그렇게 하지 않으면 네가 네 명예를 남에게 빼앗기고 네 목숨을 잔인한 사람에게 빼앗길지도 모른다.

9 If you do, you will lose your honor and will lose to merciless people all you have achieved.

10 네가 모르는 사람들이 네 재물로 잔치를 벌이고 네가 수고한 것이 남의 집으로 돌아갈 것이다.

10 Strangers will consume your wealth, and someone else will enjoy the fruit of your labor.

11 결국 네 몸이 병들게 된 후 네 인생의 끝에 가서 너는 탄식하며

11 In the end you will groan in anguish when disease consumes your body.

12 말할 것이다. "내가 왜 교훈을 싫어하며 꾸지람을 무시했을까!

12 You will say, "How I hated discipline! If only I had not ignored all the warnings!

13 내가 선생님의 말씀에 순종하지 않고 나를 가르쳤던 그분들의 말에 귀 기울이지 않았더니

13 Oh, why didn't I listen to my teachers? Why didn't I pay attention to my instructors?

14 모든 사람들이 보는 앞에서 망하게 생겼구나!"

14 I have come to the brink of utter ruin, and now I must face public disgrace."

15 너는 네 샘물에서 물을 마시고 네 우물에서 흐르는 물만 마셔라.

15 Drink water from your own well - share your love only with your wife.

16 네 샘이 널리 흘러넘치고 네 시냇물이 거리에 넘치게 하겠느냐?

16 Why spill the water of your springs in the streets, having sex with just anyone?

17 그 물을 너만의 것이 되게 하고 다른 사람과는 절대로 나누지 마라.

17 You should reserve it for yourselves. Never share it with strangers.

18 네 샘이 복된 줄 알아라. 네가 젊을 때 만난 아내를 기뻐하여라.

18 Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you. Rejoice in the wife of your youth.

19 그녀를 사랑스러운 암사슴, 우아한 암노루처럼 여겨라. 그 품을 항상 만족하며 그녀의 사랑을 항상 기뻐하여라.

19 She is a loving deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts satisfy you always. May you always be captivated by her love.

20 내 아들아, 왜 외간 여자에게 마음을 빼앗기겠느냐? 왜 다른 여자의 가슴을 껴안겠느냐?

20 Why be captivated, my son, by an immoral woman, or fondle the breasts of a promiscuous woman?

21 사람이 하는 일은 여호와의 눈앞에 있으니 그분이 그 모든 길을 살피신다.

21 For the Lord sees clearly what a man does, examining every path he takes.

22 악인은 자기 죄악에 걸리고 그 죄의 올무에 걸려든다.

22 An evil man is held captive by his own sins; they are ropes that catch and hold him.

23 그는 훈계를 받지 않아서 죽고 그토록 어리석은 채로 방황할 것이다.

23 He will die for lack of self-control; he will be lost because of his great foolishness.

1 <어리석음에 대한 경고> 내 아들아 만약 네가 네 친구를 위해 담보를 세우거나 만약 남을 위해 보증을 섰다면

1 My child, if you have put up security for a friend's debt or agreed to guarantee the debt of a stranger -

2 너는 네가 한 말로 덫에 걸린 것이요, 네가 한 말에 스스로 잡히게 된 것이다.

2 if you have trapped yourself by your agreement and are caught by what you said -

3 내 아들아, 네가 네 친구의 손에 잡혔으니 너는 네 이웃에게 가서 겸손히 간청하여라!

3 follow my advice and save yourself, for you have placed yourself at your friend's mercy. Now swallow your pride; go and beg to have your name erased.

4 잠을 자지도 말고 졸지도 말고

4 Don't put it off; do it now! Don't rest until you do.

5 노루가 사냥꾼의 손에서 벗어나듯이, 새가 사냥꾼의 손에서 벗어나듯이 너 자신을 구하여라.

5 Save yourself like a gazelle escaping from a hunter, like a bird fleeing from a net.

6 너, 게으름뱅이야, 개미에게 가서 그들이 하는 것을 보고 지혜를 얻어라.

6 Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise!

7 개미들은 장군도, 감독도, 통치자도 없는데

7 Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work,

8 여름에 먹을 것을 저장해 두고 추수 때에 양식을 모은다.

8 they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter.

9 너, 게으름뱅이야, 너는 언제까지 자겠느냐? 언제 잠에서 깨어 일어나겠느냐?

9 But you, lazybones, how long will you sleep? When will you wake up?

10 "조금만 더 자자, 조금만 더 눈 좀 붙이자, 조금만 더 손을 모으고 자자" 하다가

10 A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest -

11 가난이 강도처럼 네게 이르고 빈곤이 무장한 사람처럼 이르게 될 것이다.

11 then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.

12 못된 사람, 악한 사람은 거짓말만 하고 다니고

12 What are worthless and wicked people like? They are constant liars,

13 그들은 눈짓과 발짓과 손짓으로 서로 신호를 한다.

13 signaling their deceit with a wink of the eye, a nudge of the foot, or the wiggle of fingers.

14 또 그들은 마음에 심술이 있어 계속 악한 일을 꾀하며 싸움을 부추긴다.

14 Their perverted hearts plot evil, and they constantly stir up trouble.

15 그러므로 재앙이 한순간에 그들을 덮칠 것이며 그들은 갑자기 파멸해 회복될 수 없을 것이다.

15 But they will be destroyed suddenly, broken in an instant beyond all hope of healing.

16 여호와께서 미워하시며 그분이 정말로 싫어하시는 것 예닐곱 가지가 있다.

16 There are six things the Lord hates - no, seven things he detests.

17 곧 거만한 눈, 거짓말하는 혀, 죄 없는 피를 흘리는 손,

17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent,

18 악한 계략을 꾸미는 마음, 악한 일을 하려는 데 빠른 발,

18 a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong,

19 거짓말을 쏟아붓는 거짓 증인, 형제들 사이에 불화를 심는 사람이다.

19 a false witness who pours out lies, a person who sows discord in a family.

20 <간음에 대한 경고> 내 아들아, 네 아버지의 계명을 지키고 네 어머니의 가르침을 버리지 마라.

20 My son, obey your father's commands, and don't neglect your mother's instruction.

21 그것을 네 마음에 잘 간직하며 네 목에 걸고 다녀라.

21 Keep their words always in your heart. Tie them around your neck.

22 네가 다닐 때 그것이 너를 인도할 것이요, 네가 잘 때 그것이 너를 지켜 줄 것이요, 네가 깨면 그것이 너와 말을 할 것이다.

22 When you walk, their counsel will lead you. When you sleep, they will protect you. When you wake up, they will advise you.

23 이 계명은 등불이요, 이 율법은 빛이며 가르침 있는 꾸지람은 생명의 길이니

23 For their command is a lamp and their instruction a light; their corrective discipline is the way to life.

24 너를 악한 여자로부터, 외간 여자의 아첨하는 말로부터 지켜 줄 것이다.

24 It will keep you from the immoral woman, from the smooth tongue of a promiscuous woman.

25 네 마음에서 그 여자의 아름다움을 탐하지 말고 그 여자가 눈짓으로 너를 홀리지 못하게 하여라.

25 Don't lust for her beauty. Don't let her coy glances seduce you.

26 창녀는 네게 빵 한 덩이만 남게 하고 음란한 여자는 네 귀한 목숨을 빼앗아간다.

26 For a prostitute will bring you to poverty, but sleeping with another man's wife will cost you your life.

27 불을 품었는데 그 옷이 타지 않겠느냐?

27 Can a man scoop a flame into his lap and not have his clothes catch on fire?

28 뜨거운 숯불 위를 걷는데 발이 데지 않겠느냐?

28 Can he walk on hot coals and not blister his feet?

29 남의 아내와 간음하는 사람도 마찬가지다. 그녀를 건드리는 사람은 죄 없다고 할 수 없을 것이다.

29 So it is with the man who sleeps with another man's wife. He who embraces her will not go unpunished.

30 도둑이 굶주려 배를 채우려고 도둑질을 했다면 사람에게 멸시받지는 않으나

30 Excuses might be found for a thief who steals because he is starving.

31 그가 잡히면 자기 집의 모든 물건을 내놓아야 하리니 일곱 배로 갚아 주어야 한다.

31 But if he is caught, he must pay back seven times what he stole, even if he has to sell everything in his house.

32 그러나 여자와 간음한 사람은 생각이 모자라는 자니 그렇게 하는 사람은 자기 영혼을 망치는 것이다.

32 But the man who commits adultery is an utter fool, for he destroys himself.

33 그는 상처를 받고 망신을 당할 것이요, 그 수치가 결코 씻겨지지 않을 것이다.

33 He will be wounded and disgraced. His shame will never be erased.

34 질투가 남편의 분노를 일으키니 그가 원수를 갚는 날에는 용서가 없을 것이다.

34 For the woman's jealous husband will be furious, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.

35 그는 어떤 보상도 받지 않을 것이요, 네가 아무리 많은 선물을 주더라도 받으려고 하지 않을 것이다.

35 He will accept no compensation, nor be satisfied with a payoff of any size.

1 <음녀에 대한 경고> 내 아들아, 내 말을 지키고 내 계명을 네 속에 간직하여라.

1 Follow my advice, my son; always treasure my commands.

2 네가 내 계명을 지키면 잘살게 될 것이니 내 가르침을 네 눈동자처럼 지켜라.

2 Obey my commands and live! Guard my instructions as you guard your own eyes.

3 그것을 네 손가락에 매고 네 마음 판에 새겨 넣어라.

3 Tie them on your fingers as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart.

4 지혜에게 "너는 내 누이"라고 말하고 통찰력을 "내 친구"라고 불러라.

4 Love wisdom like a sister; make insight a beloved member of your family.

5 그것이 너를 외간 여자에게서, 말로 아첨하는 이방 여자에게서 지켜 줄 것이다.

5 Let them protect you from an affair with an immoral woman, from listening to the flattery of a promiscuous woman.

6 내 집 창문에서 창살 틈으로 내다보니

6 While I was at the window of my house, looking through the curtain,

7 어리석은 사람들 가운데, 그 젊은이들 가운데서 지혜 없는 청년이 내 눈에 띄었다.

7 I saw some naive young men, and one in particular who lacked common sense.

8 그가 모퉁이 근처 길로 내려가 그 여자의 집 쪽으로 걸어가고 있었다.

8 He was crossing the street near the house of an immoral woman, strolling down the path by her house.

9 때는 어스름할 무렵, 날이 저물고 밤의 어둠이 내릴 무렵이었다.

9 It was at twilight, in the evening, as deep darkness fell.

10 그때 한 여자가 창녀의 옷을 입고 교활한 속셈으로 그를 맞으러 나왔다.

10 The woman approached him, seductively dressed and sly of heart.

11 그 여자는 수다스럽고 고집이 세며 그 발은 집 안에 있는 적이 없고

11 She was the brash, rebellious type, never content to stay at home.

12 바깥에서, 길거리에서, 길모퉁이마다 숨어서 기다린다.

12 She is often in the streets and markets, soliciting at every corner.

13 여자가 그 청년을 붙잡고 입을 맞추며 뻔뻔한 얼굴로 이렇게 말했다.

13 She threw her arms around him and kissed him, and with a brazen look she said,

14 "내가 집에서 화목제를 드렸는데 오늘에서야 내 서원을 이루었답니다.

14 "I've just made my peace offerings and fulfilled my vows.

15 그래서 당신을 맞으려고 나왔고 그토록 당신의 얼굴을 찾다가 이제야 만났네요!

15 You're the one I was looking for! I came out to find you, and here you are!

16 내가 침대를 이집트의 무늬 넣은 천으로 씌워 놓았고

16 My bed is spread with beautiful blankets, with colored sheets of Egyptian linen.

17 또 몰약과 알로에와 계피 향을 뿌려 놓았지요.

17 I've perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

18 와서 우리 아침까지 깊은 사랑을 나눠요. 우리가 서로 사랑을 즐겨요!

18 Come, let's drink our fill of love until morning. Let's enjoy each other's caresses,

19 남편은 멀리 여행을 떠나서 집에 없고

19 for my husband is not home. He's away on a long trip.

20 돈지갑을 두둑이 채워 가지고 갔으니 보름이 돼야 집에 올 거예요."

20 He has taken a wallet full of money with him and won't return until later this month."

21 그 여자가 온갖 사탕발림하는 말로 그를 유혹하고 그 입술의 꼬드기는 말로 그에게 떼를 썼다.

21 So she seduced him with her pretty speech and enticed him with her flattery.

22 그가 단번에 그 여자를 따라갔는데 그 꼴이 소가 도살장으로 가는 것 같고 바보가 족쇄에 매이러 가는 것 같았다.

22 He followed her at once, like an ox going to the slaughter. He was like a stag caught in a trap,

23 화살이 간을 꿰뚫기를 기다리는데 새가 자기 목숨이 걸린 줄도 모르고 덫으로 날아드는 것 같았다.

23 awaiting the arrow that would pierce its heart. He was like a bird flying into a snare, little knowing it would cost him his life.

24 그러니 내 자녀들아, 내 말을 잘 듣고 내가 하는 말에 주의를 기울이라.

24 So listen to me, my sons, and pay attention to my words.

25 네 마음이 그 여자의 길로 기울지 않게 하고 그 여자의 길에서 방황하지 않게 하여라.

25 Don't let your hearts stray away toward her. Don't wander down her wayward path.

26 그 여자 때문에 상처 나서 쓰러진 사람이 많다. 그 여자로 인해 죽임당한 힘센 남자들이 참으로 많다.

26 For she has been the ruin of many; many men have been her victims.

27 그 여자의 집은 지옥으로 가는 길이니 죽음의 방으로 내려가는 것이다.

27 Her house is the road to the grave. Her bedroom is the den of death.
