21.

1 왕의 마음은 여호와의 손에 달려 있어 강물과 같이 여호와께서 원하시는 대로 돌리신다.

1 The king's heart is like a stream of water directed by the Lord; he guides it wherever he pleases.

2 사람의 행위가 다 자기 눈에는 옳게 보이지만 그 마음은 여호와께서 살펴보신다.

2 People may be right in their own eyes, but the Lord examines their heart.

3 의와 공의를 행하며 사는 것은 희생제사를 드리는 것보다 여호와께서 더 기뻐하신다.

3 The Lord is more pleased when we do what is right and just than when we offer him sacrifices.

4 거만한 눈과 교만한 마음, 악인이 경작하는 것은 죄다.

4 Haughty eyes, a proud heart, and evil actions are all sin.

5 부지런한 사람의 생각은 풍성한 결과에 이르지만 마음만 급한 사람은 궁핍함에 이를 뿐이다.

5 Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.

6 거짓말하는 혀로 얻은 보물은 죽음을 구하는 자들의 사라지는 물거품과 같다.

6 Wealth created by a lying tongue is a vanishing mist and a deadly trap.

7 악인의 강도질은 자기를 멸망시키리니 그들이 올바르게 살기를 거절하기 때문이다.

7 The violence of the wicked sweeps them away, because they refuse to do what is just.

8 죄인의 길은 악하고 굽어 있지만 깨끗한 사람의 길은 올바르다.

8 The guilty walk a crooked path; the innocent travel a straight road.

9 잘 다투는 아내와 넓은 집에서 사는 것보다 지붕 한 모퉁이에 혼자 사는 것이 낫다.

9 It's better to live alone in the corner of an attic than with a quarrelsome wife in a lovely home.

10 악인의 마음은 악한 것만을 바라니 그는 자기 이웃에게도 은혜를 베풀지 못한다.

10 Evil people desire evil; their neighbors get no mercy from them.

11 거만한 사람이 벌을 받으면 우둔한 사람이 지혜로워지며 지혜로운 사람이 훈계를 받으면 지식을 얻게 된다.

11 If you punish a mocker, the simpleminded become wise; if you instruct the wise, they will be all the wiser.

12 의로우신 하나님께서는 악인의 집을 주목하시고 그를 망하게 하신다.

12 The Righteous One knows what is going on in the homes of the wicked; he will bring disaster on them.

13 가난한 사람의 부르짖음에 귀를 막으면 자기도 부르짖게 될 때 아무에게도 응답받지 못할 것이다.

13 Those who shut their ears to the cries of the poor will be ignored in their own time of need.

14 남몰래 주는 선물은 화를 달래고 품에 감춘 뇌물은 큰 진노를 누그러뜨린다.

14 A secret gift calms anger; a bribe under the table pacifies fury.

15 공의가 이루어지면 의인은 기뻐하고 악인은 파멸하게 된다.

15 Justice is a joy to the godly, but it terrifies evildoers.

16 깨달음의 길에서 떠난 사람은 죽은 사람들과 함께 있게 될 것이다.

16 The person who strays from common sense will end up in the company of the dead.

17 쾌락을 좋아하는 사람은 가난해지고 포도주와 기름을 좋아하는 사람도 결코 부자가 되지 못할 것이다.

17 Those who love pleasure become poor; those who love wine and luxury will never be rich.

18 악인은 의인 대신 치르는 몸값이 되고 죄를 범한 사람은 정직한 사람 대신 치르는 몸값이 된다.

18 The wicked are punished in place of the godly, and traitors in place of the honest.

19 다투기 좋아하고 쉽게 화내는 아내와 사느니 광야에서 혼자 사는 것이 낫다.

19 It's better to live alone in the desert than with a quarrelsome, complaining wife.

20 의인의 집에는 값진 보물과 기름이 있지만 어리석은 사람은 자기가 가진 것을 다 없애 버린다.

20 The wise have wealth and luxury, but fools spend whatever they get.

21 의와 자비를 추구하는 사람은 생명과 의와 명예를 얻는다.

21 Whoever pursues righteousness and unfailing love will find life, righteousness, and honor.

22 지혜로운 사람은 강자들의 성읍에 올라가서 그들이 믿고 있는 요새를 무너뜨린다.

22 The wise conquer the city of the strong and level the fortress in which they trust.

23 입과 혀를 지키는 사람은 자기 자신을 재앙으로부터 지킨다.

23 Watch your tongue and keep your mouth shut, and you will stay out of trouble.

24 하늘 높은 줄 모르고 교만하게 행동하는 사람, 그는 교만하고 오만하며 냉소적인 사람이다.

24 Mockers are proud and haughty; they act with boundless arrogance.

25 게으름뱅이의 욕심은 그 자신까지 죽이니 자기 손으로 어떤 일도 하기 싫어하기 때문이다.

25 Despite their desires, the lazy will come to ruin, for their hands refuse to work.

26 악인은 하루 종일 욕심만 부리나 의인은 아낌없이 베푼다.

26 Some people are always greedy for more, but the godly love to give!

27 악인의 제물이 역겨우면 악한 의도로 가져온 제물은 어떻겠는가!

27 The sacrifice of an evil person is detestable, especially when it is offered with wrong motives.

28 거짓 증인은 망할 것이나 진실한 증인의 말에는 힘이 있다.

28 A false witness will be cut off, but a credible witness will be allowed to speak.

29 악인은 얼굴이 굳어지나 정직한 사람의 길은 순탄하다.

29 The wicked bluff their way through, but the virtuous think before they act.

30 어떤 지혜나 깨달음, 계획도 여호와께 대항할 수 없다.

30 No human wisdom or understanding or plan can stand against the Lord.

31 전쟁을 위해 말이 준비돼도 승리는 여호와께 달렸다.

31 The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the Lord.

1 많은 재산보다는 명예를 선택하는 것이 더 낫고 은과 금보다는 은총을 받는 것이 더 낫다.

1 Choose a good reputation over great riches; being held in high esteem is better than silver or gold.

2 부와 가난은 이런 공통점이 있는데 둘 다 여호와께서 만드신 것이다.

2 The rich and poor have this in common. The Lord made them both.

3 현명한 사람은 위험을 보고 피하지만 우둔한 사람은 계속 나아가다가 화를 당하고 만다.

3 A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.

4 겸손하고 여호와를 경외하는 사람은 부와 명예와 생명을 얻게 된다.

4 True humility and fear of the Lord lead to riches, honor, and long life.

5 악인의 길에는 가시와 덫이 있지만 자기 영혼을 지키는 사람은 그런 것들과는 거리가 멀다.

5 Corrupt people walk a thorny, treacherous road; whoever values life will avoid it.

6 어린아이에게 바른길을 가르치라. 그러면 나이 들어서도 그 길을 떠나지 않을 것이다.

6 Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.

7 부자는 가난한 사람을 다스리고 빚진 사람은 빚쟁이의 종이 된다.

7 Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender.

8 죄악을 심는 사람은 거둘 것이 없으며 분노하며 휘두르는 막대기는 부러질 것이다.

8 Those who plant injustice will harvest disaster, and their reign of terror will come to an end.

9 남을 잘 보살펴 주는 자는 복이 있을 것이다. 이는 그가 자기 먹을 것을 가난한 사람에게 나눠 주기 때문이다.

9 Blessed are those who are generous, because they feed the poor.

10 거만한 사람을 쫓아내라. 그러면 다툼이 없어지리니 논쟁과 모욕하는 일이 그칠 것이다.

10 Throw out the mocker, and fighting goes, too. Quarrels and insults will disappear.

11 순결한 마음을 사랑하는 사람은 그가 하는 은혜로운 말 때문에 왕의 친구가 될 것이다.

11 Whoever loves a pure heart and gracious speech will have the king as a friend.

12 여호와의 눈은 지식을 지키시지만 범죄자의 말은 좌절시키신다.

12 The Lord preserves those with knowledge, but he ruins the plans of the treacherous.

13 게으름뱅이는 "밖에 사자가 있으니 내가 거리에서 죽임당할 것 같다!"라고 한다.

13 The lazy person claims, "There's a lion out there! If I go outside, I might be killed!"

14 외간 여자의 입은 깊은 구덩이니 여호와께 미움받는 사람은 거기에 빠질 것이다.

14 The mouth of an immoral woman is a dangerous trap; those who make the Lord angry will fall into it.

15 어린아이의 마음은 어리석기 짝이 없지만 가르침의 막대기가 어리석음을 멀리 쫓아낼 수 있다.

15 A youngster's heart is filled with foolishness, but physical discipline will drive it far away.

16 재물을 늘리기 위해 가난한 사람을 못 살게 구는 사람과 부자에게 자꾸 갖다 바치는 사람은 반드시 가난해질 것이다.

16 A person who gets ahead by oppressing the poor or by showering gifts on the rich will end in poverty.

17 <지혜자의 서른 가지 말씀, 첫 번째 말씀> 귀를 기울여 지혜로운 사람의 말을 듣고 내가 가르치는 것을 네 마음에 잘 새겨라.

17 Listen to the words of the wise; apply your heart to my instruction.

18 네가 이것들을 네 마음속에 잘 간직해 그것을 모두 네 입술로 말하면 네게 즐거움이 된다.

18 For it is good to keep these sayings in your heart and always ready on your lips.

19 이는 네가 여호와를 의뢰하며 살도록 내가 오늘 네게 가르쳐 주는 것이다.

19 I am teaching you today - yes, you - so you will trust in the Lord.

20 내가 네게 가장 뛰어난 조언과 지식을 써 주었으니

20 I have written thirty sayings for you, filled with advice and knowledge.

21 네가 진리의 말씀을 분명히 알고 네게 어떤 사람이 오더라도 진리의 말씀으로 대답할 수 있게 하려는 것이다.

21 In this way, you may know the truth and take an accurate report to those who sent you.

22 <두 번째 말씀> 가난하다고 그 가난한 사람에게서 함부로 빼앗지 말고 불쌍한 사람을 성문에서 학대하지 마라.

22 Don't rob the poor just because you can, or exploit the needy in court.

23 여호와께서 그들을 위해 변호하시고 그들을 약탈한 사람들을 약탈하실 것이기 때문이다.

23 For the Lord is their defender. He will ruin anyone who ruins them.

24 <세 번째 말씀> 성급한 사람과 어울리지 말고 화를 잘 내는 사람과 함께 다니지 마라.

24 Don't befriend angry people or associate with hot-tempered people,

25 네가 그 행동을 배워 네 영혼이 덫에 걸리게 될지 모른다.

25 or you will learn to be like them and endanger your soul.

26 <네 번째 말씀> 너는 담보를 잡히거나 남의 빚보증을 서지 마라.

26 Don't agree to guarantee another person's debt or put up security for someone else.

27 네가 갚을 것이 없게 되면 네가 누워 있는 침대까지 빼앗기지 않겠느냐?

27 If you can't pay it, even your bed will be snatched from under you.

28 <다섯 번째 말씀> 옛날에 네 조상들이 세운 경곗돌을 옮기지 마라.

28 Don't cheat your neighbor by moving the ancient boundary markers set up by previous generations.

29 <여섯 번째 말씀> 자기 일에 솜씨가 부지런한 사람을 보았느냐? 그런 사람은 왕들 앞에 설 것이며 낮고 천한 사람들 앞에 서지는 않을 것이다.

29 Do you see any truly competent workers? They will serve kings rather than working for ordinary people.

1 <일곱 번째 말씀> 네가 높은 사람과 함께 앉아 음식을 먹게 되거든 네 앞에 누가 앉아 있는지 잘 보고

1 While dining with a ruler, pay attention to what is put before you.

2 만약 네가 많이 먹는 것을 좋아하는 사람이라면 네 목에 칼을 두어서라도 참아라.

2 If you are a big eater, put a knife to your throat;

3 그리고 그 온갖 맛난 음식에 군침 흘리지 마라. 그 음식은 너를 속이려는 것이다.

3 don't desire all the delicacies, for he might be trying to trick you.

4 <여덟 번째 말씀> 부자가 되려고 애쓰지 말고 네 자신의 지혜를 버려라.

4 Don't wear yourself out trying to get rich. Be wise enough to know when to quit.

5 너는 별것도 아닌 것에 주목하지 마라. 재물은 분명 스스로 날개를 달고 독수리가 하늘로 날아가듯 날아가 버린다.

5 In the blink of an eye wealth disappears, for it will sprout wings and fly away like an eagle.

6 <아홉 번째 말씀> 너는 인색한 사람의 빵을 먹지 말며 그가 온갖 맛있는 음식을 먹는 것을 보고 탐내지 마라.

6 Don't eat with people who are stingy; don't desire their delicacies.

7 그 마음에 생각하는 그대로 사람도 그런즉, 그가 네게 "먹고 마셔라"라고 말하지만 그 속마음은 네 편이 아니다.

7 They are always thinking about how much it costs. "Eat and drink," they say, but they don't mean it.

8 네가 조금만 먹어도 토해 내게 되고 네 아첨도 아무런 소용이 없을 것이다.

8 You will throw up what little you've eaten, and your compliments will be wasted.

9 <열 번째 말씀> 어리석은 사람의 귀에다 말하지 마라. 그는 네가 말한 지혜를 조롱할 것이다.

9 Don't waste your breath on fools, for they will despise the wisest advice.

10 <열한 번째 말씀> 옛 경곗돌을 옮기지 말고 고아들의 밭에는 들어가지 마라.

10 Don't cheat your neighbor by moving the ancient boundary markers; don't take the land of defenseless orphans.

11 그들을 구원해 주시는 분은 강하시니 그들이 너에 대해 탄원하는 것을 들어주실 것이다.

11 For their Redeemer is strong; he himself will bring their charges against you.

12 <열두 번째 말씀> 훈계를 네 마음에 받아들이고 지식의 말씀에 네 귀를 기울여라.

12 Commit yourself to instruction; listen carefully to words of knowledge.

13 <열세 번째 말씀> 어린아이를 바로잡는 일을 그만두지 마라. 네가 매를 때린다고 죽기야 하겠느냐?

13 Don't fail to discipline your children. They won't die if you spank them.

14 매를 때려서라도 그 영혼을 지옥에서 구해 내야 하지 않겠느냐?

14 Physical discipline may well save them from death.

15 <열네 번째 말씀> 내 아들아, 네 마음이 지혜로우면 내 마음도 기쁠 것이다.

15 My child, if your heart is wise, my own heart will rejoice!

16 네가 바른말을 하면 내 마음이 즐거울 것이다.

16 Everything in me will celebrate when you speak what is right.

17 <열다섯 번째 말씀> 죄인들을 부러워하지 말고 늘 오직 여호와를 경외하는 일에만 마음을 써라.

17 Don't envy sinners, but always continue to fear the Lord.

18 분명 네 미래가 밝아지고 네가 기대하는 것은 끊어지지 않을 것이다.

18 You will be rewarded for this; your hope will not be disappointed.

19 <열여섯 번째 말씀> 내 아들아, 잘 듣고 지혜를 얻어서 네 마음을 바른길로 이끌어라.

19 My child, listen and be wise. Keep your heart on the right course.

20 술을 많이 마시는 사람과 고기를 즐기는 사람들과 어울리지 마라.

20 Do not carouse with drunkards or feast with gluttons,

21 술 취하고 식탐하는 자는 가난해지고 잠자기를 좋아하는 자는 누더기를 입게 된다.

21 for they are on their way to poverty, and too much sleep clothes them in rags.

22 <열일곱 번째 말씀> 너를 낳은 네 아버지의 말을 잘 듣고 네 어머니가 늙더라도 무시하지 마라.

22 Listen to your father, who gave you life, and don't despise your mother when she is old.

23 진리를 사들이되 그것을 다시 팔지 마라. 지혜와 훈계와 지각도 마찬가지다.

23 Get the truth and never sell it; also get wisdom, discipline, and good judgment.

24 의인의 아버지에게는 큰 기쁨이 있고 지혜로운 아들을 가진 사람은 그로 인해 기뻐할 것이다.

24 The father of godly children has cause for joy. What a pleasure to have children who are wise.

25 네 부모가 기뻐할 것이며 너를 낳은 어머니가 즐거워할 것이다.

25 So give your father and mother joy! May she who gave you birth be happy.

26 <열여덟 번째 말씀> 내 아들아, 나를 주시해 보고 내가 걸어온 길을 따르도록 하여라.

26 O my son, give me your heart. May your eyes take delight in following my ways.

27 창녀는 깊은 함정이며 외간 여자는 좁은 구덩이다.

27 A prostitute is a dangerous trap; a promiscuous woman is as dangerous as falling into a narrow well.

28 그녀는 숨어서 남자를 노리다가 남자들 가운데 배신자들을 길러 낸다.

28 She hides and waits like a robber, eager to make more men unfaithful.

29 <열아홉 번째 말씀> 재앙이 누구에게 있느냐? 근심이 누구에게 있느냐? 다툼이 누구에게 있느냐? 불평이 누구에게 있느냐? 원인 모를 상처가 누구에게 있느냐? 충혈된 눈이 누구에게 있느냐?

29 Who has anguish? Who has sorrow? Who is always fighting? Who is always complaining? Who has unnecessary bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?

30 술에 찌든 사람들, 섞은 술을 찾아다니는 사람들이다.

30 It is the one who spends long hours in the taverns, trying out new drinks.

31 포도주는 붉고 잔에서 번쩍이며 마실 때 좋게 넘어가니 너는 그것을 보지도 마라.

31 Don't gaze at the wine, seeing how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup, how smoothly it goes down.

32 결국에는 그것이 너를 뱀처럼 물고 독사처럼 독을 쏠 것이다.

32 For in the end it bites like a poisonous snake; it stings like a viper.

33 네 눈이 외간 여자를 보고 네 마음이 타락한 말을 할 것이다.

33 You will see hallucinations, and you will say crazy things.

34 너는 바다 한복판에 누운 것 같고 돛대 꼭대기에 누워 있는 것 같을 것이다.

34 You will stagger like a sailor tossed at sea, clinging to a swaying mast.

35 그러고는 "아무리 때려 봐라. 내가 아픈가. 아무리 때려 봐라. 내가 고통을 느낄 수 있나. 내가 언제나 깨어서 다시 술을 마실까?" 할 것이다.

35 And you will say, "They hit me, but I didn't feel it. I didn't even know it when they beat me up. When will I wake up so I can look for another drink?"
