4.

1 <억압, 수고, 동무> 내가 다시 해 아래에서 일어나고 있는 모든 억압당하는 일을 살펴보았다. 억압받는 사람들이 눈물을 흘리지만 그들을 위로해 줄 사람이 없다. 억압하는 사람들은 힘을 행사하는데 억압받는 사람들을 위로하는 사람이 없다.

1 Again, I observed all the oppression that takes place under the sun. I saw the tears of the oppressed, with no one to comfort them. The oppressors have great power, and their victims are helpless.

2 그러므로 이미 죽은 사람들이 아직 살아 있는 사람들보다 복이 있다는 생각이 들었다.

2 So I concluded that the dead are better off than the living.

3 그러나 이들보다 더 복이 있는 사람은 아직 태어나지 않아서 해 아래에서 자행된 온갖 악을 보지 못한 사람이다.

3 But most fortunate of all are those who are not yet born. For they have not seen all the evil that is done under the sun.

4 또 나는 모든 노력과 모든 성취가 결국 이웃을 시기하는 마음에서 비롯된 것임을 깨달았다. 이것 또한 허무하고 뜬구름 잡는 일이다.

4 Then I observed that most people are motivated to success because they envy their neighbors. But this, too, is meaningless - like chasing the wind.

5 어리석은 사람은 팔짱을 끼고는 자기 몸만 축내는구나.

5 "Fools fold their idle hands, leading them to ruin."

6 한 손에만 가득하고 평안한 것이 양손에 가득하고 고통과 번뇌가 있는 것보다 낫다.

6 And yet, "Better to have one handful with quietness than two handfuls with hard work and chasing the wind."

7 내가 또 돌이켜 해 아래에서 허무한 것들을 보았다.

7 I observed yet another example of something meaningless under the sun.

8 혈혈단신으로 아들도 형제도 없는 사람이 있는데 그는 끝도 없이 열심히 수고한다. 그러나 쌓여 가는 재물도 그의 눈에는 도무지 흡족하지 않고 "내가 누구를 위해 이렇게 열심히 일하나? 내 영혼이 왜 이렇게 누리지도 못하고 있나?"라고 말하지도 않으니 이것 또한 허무하고 비참한 일이다.

8 This is the case of a man who is all alone, without a child or a brother, yet who works hard to gain as much wealth as he can. But then he asks himself, "Who am I working for? Why am I giving up so much pleasure now?" It is all so meaningless and depressing.

9 하나보다 둘이 더 낫다. 둘이 함께 노력하면 더 좋은 결과를 얻기 때문이다.

9 Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed.

10 넘어지게 되면 하나가 다른 하나를 일으켜 줄 수 있다. 그러나 혼자여서 넘어져도 일으켜 줄 사람이 없으면 얼마나 불쌍한가!

10 If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble.

11 또 둘이 함께 누우면 따뜻해지지만 혼자라면 어떻게 따뜻해지겠는가?

11 Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone?

12 혼자서는 질 일도 둘이서는 당해 낼 수 있으니 세 겹줄은 쉽게 끊어지지 않는다.

12 A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.

13 <출세도 허무하다> 남의 말을 받아들일 줄 모르는 늙고 어리석은 왕보다는 가난해도 지혜로운 청년이 백 번 낫다.

13 It is better to be a poor but wise youth than an old and foolish king who refuses all advice.

14 그런 청년은 감옥에 있다가도 나와서 다스릴 수 있다. 그가 그 나라에서 가난하게 태어났어도 말이다.

14 Such a youth could rise from poverty and succeed. He might even become king, though he has been in prison.

15 해 아래 다니는 모든 사람이 왕의 후계자가 된 그 청년을 따랐다.

15 But then everyone rushes to the side of yet another youth who replaces him.

16 이게 모든 무수한 백성들의 속성이니 그 이전 세대도 마찬가지였다. 그다음 세대는 그를 기뻐하지 않을 것이다. 이것 또한 허무하고 뜬구름 잡는 일이다.

16 Endless crowds stand around him, but then another generation grows up and rejects him, too. So it is all meaningless - like chasing the wind.

1 <하나님께 서원한 것은 갚으라> 너는 하나님의 집에 갈 때 네 걸음을 조심하여라. 가까이 다가가 귀 기울여 듣는 것이 자기가 잘못한 줄도 모르는 어리석은 사람들이 희생제를 드리는 것보다 나으니 이는 어리석은 사람들은 자신들이 악을 행한다고 생각하지 않기 때문이다.

1 As you enter the house of God, keep your ears open and your mouth shut. It is evil to make mindless offerings to God.

2 네 입을 쉽게 놀리지 말고 조급한 마음에 하나님 앞에 아무 말이나 내뱉지 마라. 하나님께서는 하늘에 계시고 너는 땅에 있으니 네 말수를 적게 하여라.

2 Don't make rash promises, and don't be hasty in bringing matters before God. After all, God is in heaven, and you are here on earth. So let your words be few.

3 일이 많으면 꿈을 많이 꾸듯이 말이 많으면 어리석은 소리가 나온다.

3 Too much activity gives you restless dreams; too many words make you a fool.

4 네가 하나님께 서원한 것이 있으면 그것을 지키는 데 미적거리지 마라. 그분은 어리석은 사람을 기뻐하지 않으신다. 네가 서원한 것을 갚아라.

4 When you make a promise to God, don't delay in following through, for God takes no pleasure in fools. Keep all the promises you make to him.

5 서원을 하고 지키지 않느니 차라리 서원하지 않는 것이 낫다.

5 It is better to say nothing than to make a promise and not keep it.

6 네 입 때문에 네 육체가 죄짓는 일이나 천사 앞에서 "내가 실수로 서원했다"라고 말하는 일이 없게 하여라. 왜 네 말에 하나님이 진노하셔서 네 손으로 세운 것을 망가뜨리시게 하려 하느냐?

6 Don't let your mouth make you sin. And don't defend yourself by telling the Temple messenger that the promise you made was a mistake. That would make God angry, and he might wipe out everything you have achieved.

7 꿈 많고 말 많은 것도 허무할 뿐이다. 오직 너는 하나님을 경외하여라.

7 Talk is cheap, like daydreams and other useless activities. Fear God instead.

8 <재물도 허무하다> 네가 어떤 지방에서 가난한 사람이 억압받는 것과 공의와 권리가 박탈당하는 것을 보더라도 그런 일에 놀라지 마라. 높은 사람이라도 더 높은 사람에게 감시를 당하고 또 그들보다 더 높은 사람이 있다.

8 Don't be surprised if you see a poor person being oppressed by the powerful and if justice is being miscarried throughout the land. For every official is under orders from higher up, and matters of justice get lost in red tape and bureaucracy.

9 더구나 이 땅에서 나는 것은 모두를 위한 것이다. 왕이라도 밭에서 나는 것으로 살지 않느냐!

9 Even the king milks the land for his own profit!

10 돈을 사랑하는 사람마다 돈으로 만족하는 법이 없고 부를 사랑하는 사람마다 재산이 아무리 불어나도 만족하는 법이 없다. 이것 또한 허무한 것이다.

10 Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness!

11 재산이 많아지면 먹는 사람들도 많아진다. 그러니 주인의 눈요깃거리 말고는 그것들이 무슨 이득이 되겠는가?

11 The more you have, the more people come to help you spend it. So what good is wealth - except perhaps to watch it slip through your fingers!

12 일하는 사람은 먹는 것이 적든 많든 단잠을 자나 부자는 그의 풍부함 때문에 잠을 이루지 못한다.

12 People who work hard sleep well, whether they eat little or much. But the rich seldom get a good night's sleep.

13 내가 해 아래에서 통탄할 만한 악을 보았는데 오히려 재물이 그것을 소유한 사람들에게 해가 되는 일이다.

13 There is another serious problem I have seen under the sun. Hoarding riches harms the saver.

14 재물은 어떤 재앙이 생기면 몽땅 잃어버리게 되기도 한다. 아들을 낳았어도 남겨 줄 것이 하나도 남지 않을 수도 있다.

14 Money is put into risky investments that turn sour, and everything is lost. In the end, there is nothing left to pass on to one's children.

15 그가 자기 어머니의 모태에서 벌거벗은 모습대로 나올 때처럼 돌아가며 그가 열심히 일해서 얻은 것은 아무것도 가져가지 못할 것이다.

15 We all come to the end of our lives as naked and empty-handed as on the day we were born. We can't take our riches with us.

16 이것 또한 통탄할 만한 악인데 사람이 올 때처럼 되돌아가게 된다는 것이다. 겨우 한 자락 바람을 잡으려고 이토록 열심히 일했으니 무슨 이익이 있겠는가?

16 And this, too, is a very serious problem. People leave this world no better off than when they came. All their hard work is for nothing - like working for the wind.

17 사람은 평생을 어둠 속에서 먹고 슬픔만 넘쳐 나고 병마에 시달릴 뿐이다.

17 Throughout their lives, they live under a cloud - frustrated, discouraged, and angry.

18 내가 깨닫게 된 것은 하나님께서 사람에게 주신 생애 동안 해 아래에서 먹고 마시고 열심히 일해서 보람을 얻는 것이 가장 선하고 분수에 합당하다는 것이다. 이것이 사람이 받은 몫이다.

18 Even so, I have noticed one thing, at least, that is good. It is good for people to eat, drink, and enjoy their work under the sun during the short life God has given them, and to accept their lot in life.

19 만약 하나님께서 부와 재산을 주셔서 누리게 하시고 또 제 몫으로 챙길 힘을 받게 하신 사람은 그것이 하나님의 선물임을 알아야 할 것이다.

19 And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life - this is indeed a gift from God.

20 하나님께서는 사람의 마음에 기쁨을 주실 것이니 인생살이를 그리 심각하게 생각할 것은 없다.

20 God keeps such people so busy enjoying life that they take no time to brood over the past.

1 내가 해 아래에서 또 악한 것을 보았는데 그것은 사람들 가운데서 흔히 볼 수 있는 일이다.

1 There is another serious tragedy I have seen under the sun, and it weighs heavily on humanity.

2 하나님께서 부와 재산과 명예를 주셔서 그 영혼이 원하는 것이 하나도 부족하지 않게 하시고 그것들을 그가 누리는 것이 아니라 다른 사람들이 누리게 하시니 이것 또한 허무하고 통탄할 만한 재앙이다.

2 God gives some people great wealth and honor and everything they could ever want, but then he doesn't give them the chance to enjoy these things. They die, and someone else, even a stranger, ends up enjoying their wealth! This is meaningless - a sickening tragedy.

3 사람이 100명의 자녀를 두고 장수할 수 있지만 그가 아무리 오래 살아도 그 영혼이 평안함을 누리지 못하고 제대로 묻히지도 못한다면 차라리 사산아가 그보다 더 낫다.

3 A man might have a hundred children and live to be very old. But if he finds no satisfaction in life and doesn't even get a decent burial, it would have been better for him to be born dead.

4 사산아는 허무하게 왔다가 어둠 속으로 사라지니 그 이름이 어둠으로 덮일 것이다.

4 His birth would have been meaningless, and he would have ended in darkness. He wouldn't even have had a name,

5 비록 사산아가 해를 보지도 못하고 아무것도 아는 게 없다 해도 그 사람보다는 더 평안히 안식하지 않는가!

5 and he would never have seen the sun or known of its existence. Yet he would have had more peace than in growing up to be an unhappy man.

6 정녕 사람이 1,000년의 두 배를 살아도 그 평안함을 누리지 못한다면 말이다. 모두가 같은 곳으로 가는 것이 아닌가?

6 He might live a thousand years twice over but still not find contentment. And since he must die like everyone else - well, what's the use?

7 사람이 열심히 일하는 것은 입을 위한 것이지만 그 식욕은 결코 만족하는 법이 없다.

7 All people spend their lives scratching for food, but they never seem to have enough.

8 지혜로운 사람이 어리석은 사람보다 무엇을 더 가졌겠는가? 가난한 사람이 살아 있는 사람들 앞에서 어떻게 행동해야 할지 안다고 해서 얻을 것이 무엇이겠는가?

8 So are wise people really better off than fools? Do poor people gain anything by being wise and knowing how to act in front of others?

9 눈으로 보는 것이 마음으로 갈망하는 것보다 낫다. 그러나 이것 또한 허무하고 뜬구름 잡는 일이다.

9 Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don't have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless - like chasing the wind.

10 이미 존재하고 있는 것은 무엇이든지 이름이 있다. 사람이 어떤 존재인지도 알려져 있다. 그렇다고 사람이 자기보다 강한 자와 다툴 수 있겠는가!

10 Everything has already been decided. It was known long ago what each person would be. So there's no use arguing with God about your destiny.

11 말이 많으면 많을수록 허무함은 더해만 간다. 그러니 많은 말이 사람에게 무슨 유익이 있겠는가?

11 The more words you speak, the less they mean. So what good are they?

12 그림자처럼 지나가는 허무한 날들 동안에 인생 가운데 사람에게 선한 것이 무엇인지 누가 알겠는가? 죽은 다음에 해 아래 무슨 일이 있을지 누가 말해 주겠는가?

12 In the few days of our meaningless lives, who knows how our days can best be spent? Our lives are like a shadow. Who can tell what will happen on this earth after we are gone?

1 <지혜> 좋은 이름이 좋은 향수보다 낫고 죽는 날이 태어나는 날보다 낫다.

1 A good reputation is more valuable than costly perfume. And the day you die is better than the day you are born.

2 초상집에 가는 것이 잔칫집에 가는 것보다 낫다. 모든 사람은 죽게 돼 있으니 말이다. 살아 있는 사람은 이것을 명심해야 한다.

2 Better to spend your time at funerals than at parties. After all, everyone dies - so the living should take this to heart.

3 슬픔이 웃음보다 나은 것은 슬픔 어린 얼굴이 그의 마음을 바로잡기 때문이다.

3 Sorrow is better than laughter, for sadness has a refining influence on us.

4 지혜로운 사람의 마음은 초상집에 있지만 어리석은 사람의 마음은 잔칫집에 있다.

4 A wise person thinks a lot about death, while a fool thinks only about having a good time.

5 지혜로운 사람의 꾸지람을 듣는 것이 어리석은 사람의 노래를 듣는 것보다 낫다.

5 Better to be criticized by a wise person than to be praised by a fool.

6 어리석은 사람의 웃음은 솥 밑에서 가시나무 타는 소리 같으니 이것 또한 허무하다.

6 A fool's laughter is quickly gone, like thorns crackling in a fire. This also is meaningless.

7 억압하는 것은 지혜로운 사람을 미치게 만들고 뇌물은 마음을 부패시킨다.

7 Extortion turns wise people into fools, and bribes corrupt the heart.

8 일의 끝이 시작보다 낫고 인내하는 마음이 교만한 마음보다 낫다.

8 Finishing is better than starting. Patience is better than pride.

9 너는 조급하게 분노하지 마라. 분노는 어리석은 사람의 가슴에 머무는 것이다.

9 Control your temper, for anger labels you a fool.

10 "어떻게 옛날이 지금보다 나은가?"라고 하지 마라. 그런 질문은 지혜롭지 못하다.

10 Don't long for "the good old days." This is not wise.

11 지혜는 유산처럼 좋은 것이다. 해를 보는 사람이라면 지혜의 덕을 보지 않는 사람이 없다.

11 Wisdom is even better when you have money. Both are a benefit as you go through life.

12 돈이 방패막이가 되듯 지혜도 방패막이가 된다. 그러나 지혜를 깨우쳐 아는 지식이 더 뛰어난 이유는 지혜가 그것을 가진 사람에게 생명을 주기 때문이다.

12 Wisdom and money can get you almost anything, but only wisdom can save your life.

13 하나님께서 하시는 일을 생각해 보아라. 하나님께서 구부리신 것을 누가 펼 수 있겠는가?

13 Accept the way God does things, for who can straighten what he has made crooked?

14 잘되어 갈 때는 기뻐하고 고난의 때에는 생각하여라. 이 두 가지 다 하나님께서 만드신 것이다. 이는 사람으로 하여금 그의 미래에 대해 헤아려 알지 못하게 하시려는 것이다.

14 Enjoy prosperity while you can, but when hard times strike, realize that both come from God. Remember that nothing is certain in this life.

15 나는 내 허무한 삶 가운데 이 두 가지를 다 보았다. 의인들이 자신의 의로움 가운데 망해 가는 것과 악인들이 자신의 악함 가운데 장수하는 것 말이다.

15 I have seen everything in this meaningless life, including the death of good young people and the long life of wicked people.

16 그러니 지나치게 의롭게 살려고 하지 말며 지나치게 지혜롭게도 살려고 하지 마라. 무엇 때문에 멸망을 자초하겠는가?

16 So don't be too good or too wise! Why destroy yourself?

17 또 지나치게 악하게 살지도 말고 그렇다고 어리석게 살지도 마라. 무엇 때문에 때가 되기 전에 죽으려고 하는가?

17 On the other hand, don't be too wicked either. Don't be a fool! Why die before your time?

18 하나를 붙잡되 다른 하나도 놓지 않는 게 좋다. 하나님을 경외하는 사람은 양극단을 피해야 한다.

18 Pay attention to these instructions, for anyone who fears God will avoid both extremes.

19 지혜는 성안에 있는 열 명의 용사들보다 지혜로운 한 사람을 더 강하게 한다.

19 One wise person is stronger than ten leading citizens of a town!

20 선한 일만 하고 절대로 죄짓지 않는 의인은 세상에 없다.

20 Not a single person on earth is always good and never sins.

21 사람들이 하는 모든 말에 신경 쓰지 마라. 그렇지 않으면 네 종이 너를 저주하는 말도 들릴지 모른다.

21 Don't eavesdrop on others - you may hear your servant curse you.

22 너 자신도 여러 번 남을 저주했던 것을 네 마음이 알 것이다.

22 For you know how often you yourself have cursed others.

23 이 모든 것을 내가 지혜로 시험해 보고는 "내가 지혜로워지기로 결심했다"라고 했으나 그것은 내 능력 밖이었다.

23 I have always tried my best to let wisdom guide my thoughts and actions. I said to myself, "I am determined to be wise." But it didn't work.

24 지혜라는 것이 그토록 멀고 길이를 알 수 없이 심오하니 누가 그것을 알겠는가?

24 Wisdom is always distant and difficult to find.

25 그리하여 내가 마음을 바쳐 지혜와 사물의 이치를 알아내려고 살펴보고 연구해 악한 것이 얼마나 어리석은지 얼마나 바보스럽고 미련한지 알아보려고 했다.

25 I searched everywhere, determined to find wisdom and to understand the reason for things. I was determined to prove to myself that wickedness is stupid and that foolishness is madness.

26 그러고 나서 내가 깨달은 것은 마음이 덫과 그물 같고 손이 사슬 같은 여자는 죽음보다 더 지독하다는 것이다. 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 사람은 그런 여자에게서 피할 수 있다. 그러나 죄인은 사로잡힐 것이다.

26 I discovered that a seductive woman is a trap more bitter than death. Her passion is a snare, and her soft hands are chains. Those who are pleasing to God will escape her, but sinners will be caught in her snare.

27 전도자가 말한다. "보라. 이것이 내가 깨달은 것이다. 내가 모든 이치를 알아내기 위해서 하나씩 하나씩 살펴보았지만

27 "This is my conclusion," says the Teacher. "I discovered this after looking at the matter from every possible angle.

28 도무지 알 수가 없다. 내 영혼이 계속 찾아 보았지만 남자 가운데는 1,000명 가운데 한 명 그것을 알아낼 수 있을까 여자 가운데는 한 명도 없었다.

28 Though I have searched repeatedly, I have not found what I was looking for. Only one out of a thousand men is virtuous, but not one woman!

29 내가 깨우친 것은 오직 이것이다. 하나님께서는 사람을 바르게 만드셨지만 사람들은 온갖 짓을 다했다는 것이다."

29 But I did find this： God created people to be virtuous, but they have each turned to follow their own downward path."
