1 온유한 대답은 진노를 가라앉히지만 과격한 말은 분노를 일으킨다.

3 여호와의 눈은 어디든지 있어 악인과 선인을 지켜보신다.

4 Gentle words are a tree of life; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.

5 어리석은 사람은 아버지의 훈계를 무시하지만 현명한 사람은 꾸지람을 받아들인다.

10 옳은 길을 저버리는 사람에게는 엄한 징계가 있고 꾸지람을 싫어하는 사람은 죽게 될 것이다.

10 Whoever abandons the right path will be severely disciplined; whoever hates correction will die.

11 지옥과 멸망도 여호와 앞에서 드러나는데 하물며 사람의 마음이야 더욱 그렇지 않겠느냐?

11 Even Death and Destruction hold no secrets from the Lord. How much more does he know the human heart!

12 거만한 사람은 자기를 꾸짖는 사람을 좋아하지 않으며 지혜로운 사람에게 가지도 않는다.

12 Mockers hate to be corrected, so they stay away from the wise.

13 행복한 마음은 얼굴에 환히 드러나지만 마음이 상하면 영혼도 상하게 마련이다.

13 A glad heart makes a happy face; a broken heart crushes the spirit.

14 지각 있는 마음은 지식을 구하지만 어리석은 사람의 입은 어리석음을 즐긴다.

18 화를 쉽게 내는 사람은 다툼을 일으키지만 화를 천천히 내는 사람은 마음을 가라앉혀 준다.

19 게으름뱅이의 길은 가시덤불로 막혀 있는 것 같지만 의인의 길은 평탄하다.

2 사람의 행위가 자기 눈에는 다 깨끗해 보여도 여호와께서는 그 마음을 꿰뚫어 보신다.

2 People may be pure in their own eyes, but the Lord examines their motives.

3 네가 하는 일을 여호와께 맡겨라. 그러면 네가 생각하는 것이 이루어질 것이다.

3 Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.

4 여호와께서는 모든 것을 그 쓰임에 맞게 지으셨으니 악인들은 재앙의 날에 쓰일 것이다.

4 The Lord has made everything for his own purposes, even the wicked for a day of disaster.

5 마음이 교만한 사람은 하나님이 싫어하시니 그들은 반드시 벌을 받게 될 것이다.

6 Unfailing love and faithfulness make atonement for sin. By fearing the Lord, people avoid evil.

7 사람의 행위가 여호와를 기쁘시게 하면 원수들까지도 그와 화평하게 지낼 수 있게 하신다.

7 When people's lives please the Lord, even their enemies are at peace with them.

8 적게 가지고 의로운 것이 많이 벌면서 올바르지 못한 것보다 낫다.

8 Better to have little, with godliness, than to be rich and dishonest.

9 사람이 마음으로 자기 앞길을 계획한다 해도 그 걸음은 여호와께서 이끄신다.

9 We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.

10 왕의 판결은 하나님의 판결이니 왕은 공의롭게 판결해야 한다.

10 The king speaks with divine wisdom; he must never judge unfairly.

11 공정한 저울과 추는 여호와의 것이고 주머니 속의 모든 추들도 다 그분이 만드신 것이다.

11 The Lord demands accurate scales and balances; he sets the standards for fairness.

12 왕은 악을 행하는 것을 싫어해야 한다. 오직 공의로만 왕위가 굳게 세워지기 때문이다.

13 왕들은 정직한 말을 기뻐하고 올바르게 말하는 사람을 높이 평가한다.

14 왕의 진노는 저승사자와 같지만 지혜로운 사람은 왕의 진노를 달랜다.

14 The anger of the king is a deadly threat; the wise will try to appease it.

15 왕의 얼굴빛이 밝아야 생명을 얻을 수 있으며 그 은총은 늦은 비를 뿌리는 구름 같다.

15 When the king smiles, there is life; his favor refreshes like a spring rain.

16 금보다 지혜를 구하는 것이, 은보다 통찰력을 얻는 것이 얼마나 더 나은지!

16 How much better to get wisdom than gold, and good judgment than silver!

17 악을 피하는 것이 정직한 사람의 넓은 길이니 그 길을 지키는 사람은 그 영혼도 지키는 것이다.

17 The path of the virtuous leads away from evil; whoever follows that path is safe.

18 교만에는 멸망이 따르고 거만에는 몰락이 따른다.

21 The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive.

22 통찰력을 지닌 사람은 그 통찰력이 생명의 샘이지만 어리석은 사람은 그 어리석음이 길잡이가 된다.

22 Discretion is a life-giving fountain to those who possess it, but discipline is wasted on fools.

31 옳은 길을 걸어왔다면 흰머리는 영광의 면류관이 될 것이다.

31 Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained by living a godly life.

32 화내는 데 더딘 사람은 용사보다 낫고 마음을 다스릴 줄 아는 사람은 성을 빼앗는 사람보다 낫다.

33 제비는 사람이 뽑지만 그 모든 결정은 여호와께 있다.

33 We may throw the dice, but the Lord determines how they fall.

1 마른 빵을 먹더라도 평안하고 조용한 것이 온갖 맛있는 음식이 가득하고도 다투며 사는 것보다 낫다.

1 Better a dry crust eaten in peace than a house filled with feasting - and conflict.

2 지혜로운 종은 주인의 부끄러운 짓을 하는 아들을 다스리고 그 형제들과 함께 유산을 나눠 받는다.

2 A wise servant will rule over the master's disgraceful son and will share the inheritance of the master's children.

3 도가니는 은을, 용광로는 금을 단련하지만 여호와께서는 마음을 단련하신다.

3 Fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but the Lord tests the heart.

4 악인은 악한 말에 마음을 두고 거짓말쟁이는 못된 말에 귀 기울인다.

4 Wrongdoers eagerly listen to gossip; liars pay close attention to slander.

5 가난한 사람을 조롱하는 사람은 그 지으신 분을 비난하는 자요, 남이 당한 재앙을 기뻐하는 사람은 벌을 피할 수 없다.

5 Those who mock the poor insult their Maker; those who rejoice at the misfortune of others will be punished.

6 손자는 노인의 면류관이요, 부모는 그 자녀의 영광이다.

6 Grandchildren are the crowning glory of the aged; parents are the pride of their children.

7 훌륭한 말이 어리석은 사람에게 어울리지 않는데 하물며 거짓말하는 입술이 통치자에게 어울리겠느냐!

7 Eloquent words are not fitting for a fool; even less are lies fitting for a ruler.

8 뇌물은 그 뇌물을 쓰는 사람에게 요술방망이 같아서 어디에 쓰든지 안 되는 일이 없다.

9 허물을 덮어 주는 것은 사랑을 구하는 것이요, 문제를 자꾸 들추어내는 사람은 가까운 친구를 갈라놓는다.
