9.

1 예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨습니다. "내가 너희에게 진실로 말한다. 여기 서 있는 사람 가운데 죽기 전에 하나님 나라가 능력을 떨치며 오는 것을 볼 사람이 있다."

1 Jesus went on to say, "I tell you the truth, some standing here right now will not die before they see the Kingdom of God arrive in great power!"

2 <예수께서 변모되시다 (마 17:1-13;눅 9:28-36)> 6일 후에 예수께서 베드로, 야고보, 요한만 따로 데리고 높은 산으로 올라가셨습니다. 그런데 예수께서 그들 앞에서 모습이 변하셨습니다.

2 Six days later Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone. As the men watched, Jesus' appearance was transformed,

3 예수의 옷은 이 세상 그 누구도 더 이상 희게 할 수 없을 만큼 새하얗고 광채가 났습니다.

3 and his clothes became dazzling white, far whiter than any earthly bleach could ever make them.

4 그리고 거기에 엘리야가 모세와 함께 그들 앞에 나타나 예수와 이야기를 나누었습니다.

4 Then Elijah and Moses appeared and began talking with Jesus.

5 베드로가 예수께 말했습니다. "주여, 우리가 여기 있는 것이 좋겠습니다. 우리가 초막 세 개를 만들어 하나에는 주를, 하나에는 모세를, 하나에는 엘리야를 모시도록 하겠습니다."

5 Peter exclaimed, "Rabbi, it's wonderful for us to be here! Let's make three shelters as memorials - one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."

6 모두들 몹시 두려웠기 때문에 베드로는 무슨 말을 해야 좋을지 몰라 이렇게 말했습니다.

6 He said this because he didn't really know what else to say, for they were all terrified.

7 그때 구름이 나타나 그들 위를 덮더니 구름 속에서 소리가 들려왔습니다. "이는 내 사랑하는 아들이다. 그의 말을 들으라!"

7 Then a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my dearly loved Son. Listen to him."

8 그 순간 그들은 주위를 살펴보았습니다. 그러나 그때는 이미 아무도 보이지 않고 오직 예수만 그들과 함께 계셨습니다.

8 Suddenly, when they looked around, Moses and Elijah were gone, and they saw only Jesus with them.

9 산을 내려오시면서 예수께서 제자들에게 단단히 일러두셨습니다. "인자가 죽은 사람 가운데에서 살아날 때까지는 지금 본 것을 아무에게도 말하지 말라."

9 As they went back down the mountain, he told them not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

10 제자들은 이 일을 마음에 새겨 두면서도 '죽은 사람 가운데에서 살아난다'는 것이 무슨 뜻인지 몰라 서로 물어보았습니다.

10 So they kept it to themselves, but they often asked each other what he meant by "rising from the dead."

11 제자들이 예수께 물었습니다. "왜 율법학자들은 엘리야가 먼저 와야 한다고 말한 것입니까?"

11 Then they asked him, "Why do the teachers of religious law insist that Elijah must return before the Messiah comes?"

12 예수께서 대답하셨습니다. "참으로 엘리야가 먼저 와서 모든 것을 회복시킨다. 그런데 왜 성경에는 인자가 많은 고난을 받고 멸시를 당할 것이라고 기록된 것이냐?

12 Jesus responded, "Elijah is indeed coming first to get everything ready. Yet why do the Scriptures say that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be treated with utter contempt?

13 내가 너희에게 말한다. 엘리야는 이미 왔다. 그런데 사람들은 그에 대해 성경에 기록돼 있는 대로 그를 자기들 마음대로 대했다."

13 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they chose to abuse him, just as the Scriptures predicted."

14 <예수께서 귀신 들린 아이를 고치시다 (마 17:14-20;눅 9:37-43상)> 그들이 다른 제자들에게 돌아와 보니 그 제자들이 많은 사람들에게 둘러싸여 율법학자들과 논쟁을 벌이고 있었습니다.

14 When they returned to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd surrounding them, and some teachers of religious law were arguing with them.

15 사람들은 모두 예수를 보자마자 몹시 놀라며 달려와 맞이했습니다.

15 When the crowd saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with awe, and they ran to greet him.

16 예수께서 물으셨습니다. "무슨 일로 이렇게 논쟁하고 있느냐?"

16 "What is all this arguing about?" Jesus asked.

17 무리 가운데 한 사람이 대답했습니다. "선생님, 제가 아들을 데려왔습니다. 그 아이는 말 못하게 하는 더러운 귀신이 들려 있습니다.

17 One of the men in the crowd spoke up and said, "Teacher, I brought my son so you could heal him. He is possessed by an evil spirit that won't let him talk.

18 귀신이 한번 아이를 사로잡으면 아이가 땅에 거꾸러집니다. 그러면 아이는 입에 거품을 물고 이를 갈면서 몸이 뻣뻣하게 굳습니다. 그래서 선생님의 제자들에게 귀신을 쫓아내 달라고 부탁했지만 쫓아내지 못했습니다."

18 And whenever this spirit seizes him, it throws him violently to the ground. Then he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast out the evil spirit, but they couldn't do it."

19 예수께서 말씀하셨습니다. "이 믿음 없는 세대야! 내가 언제까지 너희와 함께 있어야 하겠느냐? 내가 언제까지 너희에게 참아야 하겠느냐? 아이를 데려오라."

19 Jesus said to them, "You faithless people! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to me."

20 그러자 그들이 아이를 예수께 데려왔습니다. 더러운 귀신은 예수를 보더니 곧 아이의 몸에 경련을 일으켰습니다. 아이는 땅에 거꾸러지더니 입에 거품을 물고 뒹굴었습니다.

20 So they brought the boy. But when the evil spirit saw Jesus, it threw the child into a violent convulsion, and he fell to the ground, writhing and foaming at the mouth.

21 예수께서 아이의 아버지에게 물으셨습니다. "이 아이가 언제부터 이렇게 됐느냐?" 그가 대답했습니다. "아주 어릴 때부터입니다.

21 "How long has this been happening?" Jesus asked the boy's father. He replied, "Since he was a little boy.

22 귀신이 아이를 죽이려고 여러 번 불 속에 내던지고 물속에도 빠뜨렸습니다. 그러나 선생님께서 어떻게든 하실 수 있다면 제발 우리를 불쌍히 여기시고 도와주십시오."

22 The spirit often throws him into the fire or into water, trying to kill him. Have mercy on us and help us, if you can."

23 예수께서 말씀하셨습니다. "'하실 수 있다면'이 무슨 말이냐? 믿는 사람에게는 모든 일이 가능하다."

23 "What do you mean, 'If I can'?" Jesus asked. "Anything is possible if a person believes."

24 그러자 곧 아이의 아버지가 소리쳤습니다. "내가 믿습니다! 믿음이 부족한 나를 도와주십시오!"

24 The father instantly cried out, "I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!"

25 많은 사람들이 이 광경을 보려고 달려오는 것을 보시고 예수께서 귀신을 꾸짖으셨습니다. "듣지 못하게 하고 말 못하게 하는 귀신아, 내가 네게 명령한다! 이 아이에게서 나와 다시는 들어가지 마라!"

25 When Jesus saw that the crowd of onlookers was growing, he rebuked the evil spirit. "Listen, you spirit that makes this boy unable to hear and speak," he said. "I command you to come out of this child and never enter him again!"

26 더러운 귀신은 소리 지르며 아이에게 심한 경련을 일으키더니 나갔습니다. 아이가 죽은 것같이 돼 누워 있자 많은 사람들이 수군거렸습니다. "아이가 죽었나 보다."

26 Then the spirit screamed and threw the boy into another violent convulsion and left him. The boy appeared to be dead. A murmur ran through the crowd as people said, "He's dead."

27 그때 예수께서 아이의 손을 잡아 일으키셨습니다. 그러자 아이가 벌떡 일어섰습니다.

27 But Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to his feet, and he stood up.

28 예수께서 집 안으로 들어가신 후에 제자들이 따로 물어보았습니다. "어째서 저희는 귀신을 쫓아내지 못했습니까?"

28 Afterward, when Jesus was alone in the house with his disciples, they asked him, "Why couldn't we cast out that evil spirit?"

29 예수께서 대답하셨습니다. "이런 귀신은 오직 기도로만 쫓아낼 수 있다."

29 Jesus replied, "This kind can be cast out only by prayer."

30 <예수께서 자신의 죽음을 두 번째 예고하시다 (마 17:22-23;눅 9:43하-45)> 그들은 그곳을 떠나 갈릴리를 지나가게 됐습니다. 그러나 예수께서는 자기 일행이 어디로 가는지 사람들이 모르기를 바라셨습니다.

30 Leaving that region, they traveled through Galilee. Jesus didn't want anyone to know he was there,

31 이는 제자들을 가르치고 계셨기 때문입니다. 예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨습니다. "인자는 배반을 당하고 사람들의 손에 넘겨져 죽임당할 것이다. 그러나 3일 만에 그는 다시 살아날 것이다."

31 for he wanted to spend more time with his disciples and teach them. He said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies. He will be killed, but three days later he will rise from the dead."

32 그러나 제자들은 그 말씀이 무슨 뜻인지 깨닫지 못했고 두려워서 예수께 묻지도 못했습니다.

32 They didn't understand what he was saying, however, and they were afraid to ask him what he meant.

33 그들이 가버나움으로 갔습니다. 집 안에 계실 때에 예수께서 제자들에게 물으셨습니다. "오는 길에 너희끼리 왜 논쟁했느냐?"

33 After they arrived at Capernaum and settled in a house, Jesus asked his disciples, "What were you discussing out on the road?"

34 그러자 제자들은 말이 없었습니다. 그들은 길에서 누가 가장 큰사람이냐 하는 문제로 다투었기 때문입니다.

34 But they didn't answer, because they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest.

35 예수께서 자리에 앉으시면서 열두 제자를 불러 놓고 말씀하셨습니다. "누구든지 첫째가 되려면 모든 사람의 꼴찌가 돼야 하고 모든 사람을 섬기는 종이 돼야 한다."

35 He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, "Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else."

36 예수께서 한 어린아이를 데려와 그들 가운데에 세우셨습니다. 그리고 아이를 팔로 껴안고 제자들에게 말씀하셨습니다.

36 Then he put a little child among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them,

37 "누구든지 내 이름으로 이런 어린아이 하나를 영접하는 사람은 나를 영접하는 것이고 누구든지 나를 영접하는 사람은 나를 영접하는 것이 아니라 나를 보내신 분을 영접하는 것이다."

37 "Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not only me but also my Father who sent me."

38 <우리를 반대하지 않으면 우리 편이다 (눅 9:49-50)> 요한이 말했습니다. "선생님, 선생님의 이름으로 귀신을 쫓아내는 어떤 사람을 보고 우리를 따르는 자가 아니어서 우리가 그에게 하지 못하게 했습니다."

38 John said to Jesus, "Teacher, we saw someone using your name to cast out demons, but we told him to stop because he wasn't in our group."

39 예수께서 말씀하셨습니다. "못 하게 하지 마라. 내 이름으로 기적을 행하고 나서 바로 나를 욕할 사람은 없다.

39 "Don't stop him!" Jesus said. "No one who performs a miracle in my name will soon be able to speak evil of me.

40 누구든지 우리를 반대하지 않으면 우리 편이다.

40 Anyone who is not against us is for us.

41 내가 너희에게 진실로 말한다. 너희가 그리스도의 사람인 것을 알고 너희에게 물 한 잔이라도 주는 사람은 반드시 자기가 받을 상을 잃지 않을 것이다.

41 If anyone gives you even a cup of water because you belong to the Messiah, I tell you the truth, that person will surely be rewarded.

42 <넘어지게 하는 일 (마 18:6-9;눅 17:1-2)> 또 누구든지 나를 믿는 어린아이들 중 하나라도 죄짓게 하는 사람은 차라리 큰 맷돌을 목에 달고 바다에 던져지는 것이 나을 것이다.

42 "But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone hung around your neck.

43 네 손이 너를 죄짓게 하거든 잘라 버려라. 두 손을 가지고 영원히 꺼지지 않는 지옥 불에 떨어지느니 성하지 않은 몸이 되더라도 생명에 들어가는 것이 더 낫다.

43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It's better to enter eternal life with only one hand than to go into the unquenchable fires of hell with two hands.

45 또 네 발이 너를 죄짓게 하거든 잘라 버려라. 두 발을 가지고 지옥에 던져지느니 저는 다리로 생명에 들어가는 것이 더 낫다.

45 If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It's better to enter eternal life with only one foot than to be thrown into hell with two feet.

47 또 네 눈이 너를 죄짓게 하거든 뽑아 버려라. 두 눈을 가지고 지옥에 던져지느니 한 눈만 가지고 하나님 나라에 들어가는 것이 더 낫다.

47 And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out. It's better to enter the Kingdom of God with only one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,

48 지옥은 '벌레도 죽지 않고 불도 꺼지지 않는' 곳이다.

48 'where the maggots never die and the fire never goes out.'

49 모든 사람이 소금에 절여지듯 불에 절여질 것이다.

49 "For everyone will be tested with fire.

50 소금은 좋은 것이다. 그러나 소금이 그 짠맛을 잃으면 어떻게 다시 짜게 되겠느냐? 그러므로 너희 가운데 소금을 간직하고 서로 화목하게 지내라."

50 Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty again? You must have the qualities of salt among yourselves and live in peace with each other."

1 <이혼 (마 19:1-12)> 예수께서 그곳을 떠나 유대 지방으로 가셔서 요단 강 건너편으로 가셨습니다. 그러자 사람들이 또 예수께 몰려왔고 예수께서는 늘 하시던 대로 그들을 가르치셨습니다.

1 Then Jesus left Capernaum and went down to the region of Judea and into the area east of the Jordan River. Once again crowds gathered around him, and as usual he was teaching them.

2 바리새파 사람들 몇 명이 와서 예수를 시험하려고 물었습니다. "남자가 자기 아내와 이혼해도 됩니까?"

2 Some Pharisees came and tried to trap him with this question： "Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife?"

3 예수께서 대답하셨습니다. "모세가 어떻게 하라고 명령했느냐?"

3 Jesus answered them with a question： "What did Moses say in the law about divorce?"

4 그들이 말했습니다. "모세는 남자가 이혼 증서를 써 주고 아내와 헤어져도 된다고 했습니다."

4 "Well, he permitted it," they replied. "He said a man can give his wife a written notice of divorce and send her away."

5 그러자 예수께서 말씀하셨습니다. "모세가 그런 계명을 쓴 것은 완악한 너희 마음 때문이다.

5 But Jesus responded, "He wrote this commandment only as a concession to your hard hearts.

6 그러나 하나님께서 세상을 창조하실 때 '사람을 남자와 여자로 만드셨다.'

6 But 'God made them male and female' from the beginning of creation.

7 '그러므로 남자가 자기 부모를 떠나 아내와 더불어

7 'This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife,

8 둘이 한 몸이 될 것이다. 따라서 그들이 이제 둘이 아니라 한 몸이다.'

8 and the two are united into one.' Since they are no longer two but one,

9 그러므로 하나님께서 짝지어 주신 것을 사람이 갈라놓아서는 안 된다."

9 let no one split apart what God has joined together."

10 집 안에서 제자들이 예수께 이 문제에 대해 다시 물었습니다.

10 Later, when he was alone with his disciples in the house, they brought up the subject again.

11 예수께서 대답하셨습니다. "누구든지 자기 아내와 이혼하고 다른 여자와 재혼하는 사람은 자기 아내에게 간음하는 것이다.

11 He told them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery against her.

12 또 그 아내가 자기 남편과 이혼하고 다른 남자와 재혼하는 것도 간음하는 것이다."

12 And if a woman divorces her husband and marries someone else, she commits adultery."

13 <어린아이들과 예수 (마 19:13-15;눅 18:15-17)> 사람들이 어린아이들을 예수께 데리고 와 어루만져 주시기를 원했습니다. 그러나 제자들이 그들을 꾸짖었습니다.

13 One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so he could touch and bless them. But the disciples scolded the parents for bothering him.

14 예수께서 이것을 보시고 노하시며 제자들에게 말씀하셨습니다. "어린아이들이 내게 오는 것을 허락하고 막지 말라. 하나님 나라는 이런 아이들과 같은 사람의 것이다.

14 When Jesus saw what was happening, he was angry with his disciples. He said to them, "Let the children come to me. Don't stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children.

15 내가 너희에게 진실로 말한다. 누구든지 어린아이와 같이 하나님 나라를 받아들이지 않는 사람은 결코 그곳에 들어가지 못할 것이다."

15 I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn't receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it."

16 그러고는 어린아이들을 꼭 껴안아 주시며 손을 얹으시고 축복해 주셨습니다.

16 Then he took the children in his arms and placed his hands on their heads and blessed them.

17 <부자와 하나님의 나라 (마 19:16-30;눅 18:18-30)> 예수께서 밖에 나가려고 하시는데 한 사람이 예수께로 달려와 그 앞에 무릎을 꿇고 물었습니다. "선하신 선생님, 제가 영원한 생명을 얻으려면 어떻게 해야 합니까?"

17 As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"

18 예수께서 대답하셨습니다. "네가 왜 나를 선하다고 하느냐? 오직 하나님 한 분 외에는 선한 분이 없다.

18 "Why do you call me good?" Jesus asked. "Only God is truly good.

19 네가 '살인하지 말라, 간음하지 말라, 도둑질하지 말라, 거짓 증언하지 말라, 사기 치지 말라, 부모를 공경하라' 하는 계명들을 알고 있을 것이다."

19 But to answer your question, you know the commandments： 'You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone. Honor your father and mother.'"

20 그가 말했습니다. "선생님, 저는 어릴 때부터 이것들을 모두 어김없이 지켜 왔습니다."

20 "Teacher," the man replied, "I've obeyed all these commandments since I was young."

21 예수께서 그를 쳐다보고 사랑스럽게 여기시며 말씀하셨습니다. "네게 한 가지 부족한 것이 있다. 가서 네가 가진 것을 모두 팔아 가난한 사람들에게 나눠 주어라. 그리하면 하늘에서 보물을 얻게 될 것이다. 그리고 와서 나를 따라라."

21 Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. "There is still one thing you haven't done," he told him. "Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

22 이 말씀을 듣자 그 사람은 무척 근심스러운 얼굴로 슬퍼하며 떠나갔습니다. 그가 대단한 부자였기 때문입니다.

22 At this the man's face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

23 예수께서는 제자들을 둘러보시고 말씀하셨습니다. "부자가 하나님 나라에 들어가기가 참으로 어렵다."

23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!"

24 제자들은 예수의 말씀에 무척 놀랐습니다. 그러자 예수께서 다시 말씀하셨습니다. "얘들아, 하나님 나라에 들어가기가 얼마나 어려운지

24 This amazed them. But Jesus said again, "Dear children, it is very hard to enter the Kingdom of God.

25 부자가 하나님 나라에 들어가는 것보다 낙타가 바늘귀를 지나가는 것이 더 쉽다."

25 In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!"

26 제자들은 더욱 놀라서 서로 수군거렸습니다. "그러면 도대체 누가 구원받을 수 있다는 말인가?"

26 The disciples were astounded. "Then who in the world can be saved?" they asked.

27 예수께서 그들을 보시고 말씀하셨습니다. "사람은 할 수 없지만 하나님께서는 하실 수 있다. 하나님께는 모든 것이 가능하다."

27 Jesus looked at them intently and said, "Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God."

28 베드로가 예수께 말했습니다. "보시다시피 우리는 모든 것을 버리고 주를 따랐습니다!"

28 Then Peter began to speak up. "We've given up everything to follow you," he said.

29 예수께서 말씀하셨습니다. "내가 너희에게 진실로 말한다. 나와 복음을 위해 집이나 형제나 부모나 자식이나 자기 땅을 버린 사람은

29 "Yes," Jesus replied, "and I assure you that everyone who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or property, for my sake and for the Good News,

30 지금 이 세상에서 집과 형제자매와 어머니와 자녀와 땅을 100배나 더 받되 핍박도 함께 받을 것이고 이제 올 세상에서는 영원한 생명을 받을 것이다.

30 will receive now in return a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and property?along with persecution. And in the world to come that person will have eternal life.

31 그러나 먼저 된 사람이 나중 되고 나중 된 사람이 먼저 되는 일이 많을 것이다."

31 But many who are the greatest now will be least important then, and those who seem least important now will be the greatest then."

32 <예수께서 자신의 죽음을 세 번째 예고하시다 (마 20:17-19;눅 18:31-34)> 그들이 예루살렘으로 올라가는 길이었습니다. 예수께서 앞장서서 그리로 향하시자 제자들은 놀랐고 뒤따라가던 사람들도 두려워했습니다. 예수께서는 다시 열두 제자를 따로 불러 놓으시고 앞으로 자신에게 일어날 일을 말씀해 주셨습니다.

32 They were now on the way up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. The disciples were filled with awe, and the people following behind were overwhelmed with fear. Taking the twelve disciples aside, Jesus once more began to describe everything that was about to happen to him.

33 "우리는 지금 예루살렘으로 올라가고 있다. 인자는 배반당해 대제사장들과 율법학자들에게 넘겨질 것이다. 그들은 인자를 죽이기로 결정하고 이방 사람들에게 넘겨줄 것이고

33 "Listen," he said, "we're going up to Jerusalem, where the Son of Man will be betrayed to the leading priests and the teachers of religious law. They will sentence him to die and hand him over to the Romans.

34 이방 사람들은 인자를 조롱하고 침을 뱉고 채찍으로 때린 뒤 죽일 것이다. 그러나 3일 만에 그는 다시 살아날 것이다."

34 They will mock him, spit on him, flog him with a whip, and kill him, but after three days he will rise again."

35 <야고보와 요한의 요청 (마 20:20-28)> 그러자 세베대의 두 아들 야고보와 요한이 예수께 다가와 말했습니다. "선생님, 저희의 소원을 들어주시기 원합니다."

35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came over and spoke to him. "Teacher," they said, "we want you to do us a favor."

36 예수께서 물으셨습니다. "내가 너희에게 무엇을 해 주었으면 좋겠느냐?"

36 "What is your request?" he asked.

37 그들이 대답했습니다. "주께서 영광의 자리에 앉으실 때 저희 중 하나는 오른편에, 하나는 왼편에 앉게 해 주십시오."

37 They replied, "When you sit on your glorious throne, we want to sit in places of honor next to you, one on your right and the other on your left."

38 예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨습니다. "너희가 지금 무엇을 구하고 있는지 알고 있느냐? 내가 마시는 잔을 너희가 마시며 내가 받는 세례를 너희가 받을 수 있겠느냐?"

38 But Jesus said to them, "You don't know what you are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink? Are you able to be baptized with the baptism of suffering I must be baptized with?"

39 그들이 대답했습니다. "할 수 있습니다." 예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨습니다. "너희도 정말 내가 마시는 잔을 마시고 내가 받는 세례를 받을 것이다.

39 "Oh yes," they replied, "we are able!" Then Jesus told them, "You will indeed drink from my bitter cup and be baptized with my baptism of suffering.

40 그렇지만 내 오른편이나 왼편에 앉는 것은 내가 정해 주는 것이 아니다. 그 자리는 미리 정해 놓은 사람들에게 돌아갈 것이다."

40 But I have no right to say who will sit on my right or my left. God has prepared those places for the ones he has chosen."

41 다른 열 명은 이 말을 듣고 야고보와 요한에게 분개했습니다.

41 When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant.

42 예수께서는 그들을 함께 불러 놓고 말씀하셨습니다. "너희도 알듯이 이방 사람의 통치자라는 사람들은 백성들 위에 군림하고 그 고관들도 권력을 행사한다.

42 So Jesus called them together and said, "You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them.

43 그러나 너희는 그렇게 해서는 안 된다. 오히려 누구든지 너희 중에서 큰사람이 되고 싶은 사람은 너희를 섬기는 자가 돼야 하고

43 But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant,

44 누구든지 으뜸이 되려는 사람은 모든 사람의 종이 돼야 한다.

44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else.

45 인자 역시 섬김을 받으러 온 것이 아니라 섬기러 왔고 많은 사람들을 구원하기 위해 치를 몸값으로 자기 생명을 내어 주려고 온 것이다."

45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many."

46 <눈먼 사람 바디매오가 고침을 받다 (마 20:29-34;눅18:35-43)> 그들은 여리고로 갔습니다. 예수와 제자들이 많은 사람들과 함께 그 성을 떠나려는데 디매오의 아들 바디매오라는 눈먼 사람이 길가에 앉아 구걸하고 있다가

46 Then they reached Jericho, and as Jesus and his disciples left town, a large crowd followed him. A blind beggar named Bartimaeus was sitting beside the road.

47 나사렛 예수라는 말을 듣고 소리치기 시작했습니다. "다윗의 자손 예수여, 나를 불쌍히 여겨 주십시오!"

47 When Bartimaeus heard that Jesus of Nazareth was nearby, he began to shout, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"

48 많은 사람들이 그를 꾸짖으며 조용히 하라고 했습니다. 그러나 그는 더욱더 큰 소리를 질렀습니다. "다윗의 자손이여, 나를 불쌍히 여겨 주십시오!"

48 "Be quiet!" many of the people yelled at him. But he only shouted louder, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"

49 예수께서 걸음을 멈추시고 말씀하셨습니다. "저 사람을 불러오너라." 그러자 그들이 그 사람에게 말했습니다. "안심하고 일어나라! 예수께서 너를 부르신다."

49 When Jesus heard him, he stopped and said, "Tell him to come here." So they called the blind man. "Cheer up," they said. "Come on, he's calling you!"

50 그는 겉옷을 던져 버리고 벌떡 일어나 예수께로 갔습니다.

50 Bartimaeus threw aside his coat, jumped up, and came to Jesus.

51 예수께서 그에게 물으셨습니다. "내가 무엇을 네게 해 주기 원하느냐?" 앞을 못 보는 사람이 대답했습니다. "선생님, 제가 보기를 원합니다."

51 "What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asked. "My rabbi," the blind man said, "I want to see!"

52 예수께서 말씀하셨습니다. "가거라. 네 믿음이 너를 구원했다." 그러자 그 즉시 그는 보게 됐고 예수를 따라 길을 나섰습니다.

52 And Jesus said to him, "Go, for your faith has healed you." Instantly the man could see, and he followed Jesus down the road.
